LaGuardia & Wagner Archives Welcomes Community to Celebrate Reopening

A ribbon-cutting yesterday marked the reopening of the LaGuardia and Wagner Archives in a newly renovated and expanded location. The Archives’ new space, on the seventh floor of the C-Building (Room C-760), features a dedicated gallery, library, climate-controlled vaults, and new classrooms designed to support hands-on learning with historical artifacts. “This new space marks a transformative moment for the Archives,” said Archives Director Jennifer Jensen. “With expanded facilities and dedicated classrooms, we’re not only preserving New York City’s history—we’re empowering students to engage with it directly. Our collections are living resources, and we’re excited to see how the next generation will use them to tell the city’s stories.” President Kenneth Adams spoke about the significance of the Archives to the college and recognized the Archives’ founder, Dr. Richard Lieberman. Guests also heard from Council Member Julie Won (26th District, Queens), Assembly Member Valdez (36th District, Queens), and Council Member Lincoln Restler (33rd District, Brooklyn). Following the remarks, guests were offered guided tours of the newly expanded facility and each received a signed copy of Women in New York Government, a student-produced book inspired by the historic first female majority in the New York City Council.

Documentary Featuring Dr. Allie Brashears to Make North American Premiere at DOC NYC

Dr. Allie Brashears, a Professor of Biology and Director of the CUNY LGBTQIA+ Consortium and LGBTQ+ programming for the LaGuardia and Wagner Archives, is featured alongside her husband Joseph (Jo) Schneier in the documentary My Sunnyside, directed by Matylda Kawka. After premiering in Europe earlier this year, the film will make its North American debut at DOC NYC next month. My Sunnyside tells the story of Dr. Brashears and Jo, both of whom are trans individuals. The film aims to explore the ways they "navigate their transitions, careers, and family dynamics." In a statement to Variety, Dr. Brashears said "We hope that this film brings a deeper understanding of transgender individuals. Although the transgender experience is unique in some ways, these differences often hide the overwhelming commonalities. We hope that by being able to portray the everyday lives of a trans couple, the differences will become less important than these universal connections." The documentary will be screening November 15 at Village East by Angelika, and November 19 at IFC Center, as part of DOC NYC. It will also be available for viewing online November 16 to 30. The in-person screenings will each be followed by Q&A with Matylda, Allie, Jo, and Marcin Kapron, director of photography for the film. Click here to buy tickets for one of these screenings.

LaGuardia CC Red Hawks 1 - 2 SUNY Orange Colts

On Tuesday, October 14, the Red Hawks found themselves in a battle for playoff berth, needing a victory to secure two points against a SUNY Orange side with the same record (2-7-1) and the same goal. Both teams began the match poised and aggressive, trading tackles and attacking plays. After the halftime break, the Red Hawks were down by one, and mounted a swift attack. LaGuardia center back, Modou Lamin Jaiteh, launched the ball forward. Red Hawks left winger, Hernan Guiracocha, received the pass and beat two Orange defenders before racing in on goal.

With Colts defenders hot on his heels, and the Orange goalkeeper to beat, Hernan kept dribbling. He carefully avoided the diving Colts keeper and buried the ball in the back of the Orange net to tie the game. LaGuardia continued to attack, and ultimately they paid the price for their eagerness to score a second goal. Despite a flurry of attacking action in the final 10 minutes of the game, fortune seemed to have chosen the Colts for victory, and the final whistle confirmed the score 1- 2 in SUNY Orange’s favor. The Red Hawks left the field disappointed with the result and with their playoff hopes all but extinguished. However, the effort the LaGuardia players gave showed that the team has spirit and a promising future, playoffs or not.

LaGuardia CC Red Hawks 0 - 2 BMCC Panthers

The Red Hawks visited BMCC at Pier 40 for an early afternoon match on October

9. The Panthers went quickly on the attack. LaGuardia absorbed the pressure and

successfully defended several corner kicks and free kicks. Attempts to counter-attack up the

wings were quickly smothered by the BMCC defense. The Panthers continued to probe the Red

Hawks defense, until they found weakness and exploited it; the BMCC striker picked up the ball

in midfield and evaded several defenders before facing the LaGuardia goalkeeper, Abdoul

Ouedraogo, who had rushed out to challenge the Panthers attacker. With remarkable

composure, the BMCC striker waited for Ouedraogo to go to ground before dribbling around

him. A swarm of Red Hawks defenders arriving late on the scene could not deter the Panthers

forward, who coolly slotted in the first goal of the match. BMCC scored their second goal from a

free kick. The ball sailed into the back of the net past a bewildered Ouedraogo, who expected

the shot to veer wide and out of play. LaGuardia remained unable to generate any offense of

their own in the first half. In the second half, the Red Hawks struggled to create scoring chances, tallying only two shots, but pressured the BMCC defense more. Defensively, LaGuardia held strong and allowed zero goals against in the second half. Despite showing his inexperience in the first half, Red Hawks

goalkeeper Ouedraogo performed admirably, facing 24 shots all day and saving 12 shots from

14 shots on target
