A Big Thank You to Community Partners and Elected Officials for Supporting Student Success

On Friday morning, a Community Reception was held in Poolside Café to thank local community-based organizations, employer-partners, and elected officials for their ongoing collaboration in supporting student success. In addition to funding for college programs and critical facilities upgrades, these partners provide LaGuardia students with opportunities for scholarships, paid internships, and work-based learning experiences. “As many of us say around here, you can’t dream what you can’t see,” said President Kenneth Adams. “The way for students to really think about their careers and link their classroom learning to jobs and careers and being successful professionally is to visualize success, which they can’t do if they’re never in the workplace where they might ultimately end up.” Civil Engineering major Julian Poli spoke about how LaGuardia partner Rise Light & Power have given him opportunities to learn about engineering’s role in the city’s infrastructure and a scholarship that helped him stay in school. Attendees included New York State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo Jr. (District 15), Assemblyman David I. Weprin (District 24), Queens Deputy Borough President Ebony Young, Dan Wiley from the Office of Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez, and representatives from Riis Settlement, Elmcor Youth and Adult Activities, the Newtown Creek Alliance, the Institute for Community Living, and Urban Upbound.

Boxes of whole wheat sugar cookies baked and decorated by LaGuardia Nutrition & Culinary Management students and copies of the LaGuardia and Wagner Archives’ 2024 calendar, which officially launched that day, were offered to guests. The 2024 “Pleasure and Protest: Public Spaces in New York City” calendar may be viewed or downloaded for free on the LaGuardia and Wagner Archives website. Printed copies in English or Spanish may be requested by calling the Archives at (718) 482-5065 or submitting a request online.

The second cohort of the New York Housing Authority (NYCHA) Clean Energy Academy graduated on December 19, with a ceremony scheduled at the New York City Housing Authority Ceremonial Room (5th Floor). The ceremony celebrated the achievements and the program completion of 15 NYCHA residents who participated in the 16-week training program. Kenneth Adams, President of LaGuardia Community College, was also invited to speak during the ceremony. “Congratulations to Cohort 2 of the NYCHA Clean Energy Academy,” President Adams said. “Today’s celebration is another step closer to making a difference in today’s job market – creating sustainable career pathways for residents who have obtained the skills in renewable and clean energy. I wish you much success in the future.”

LaGuardia Celebrates Nursing Graduates at RN Pinning Ceremony

Forty-three graduates, from both the RN and the LPN to RN Advanced Standing Pathway programs, will receive their nursing pins. The graduation of the RN Class of 2023 advances LaGuardia’s “3,000 Heroes” initiative to graduate 3,000 frontline NYC health workers by 2027. The pinning ceremony will start at 2:30 p.m. in Mainstage Theater. Theater Program’s Production of Everybody to be Featured at KCACTF Region 1 Festival

Local audiences recently experienced LaGuardia Community College’s Theater Program fall production of Everybody, a dark comedy by acclaimed playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, who earned a Pulitzer Prize for Drama nomination for Everybody. The production, which ran November 15– 20, has been selected to be featured in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) Region 1. The festival will take place January 30 through February 3, at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, CT, giving different audiences an opportunity to watch LaGuardia’s theatrical artistry first-hand. James Ryan (J.R.) Caldwell, director of Everybody, worked with Christopher Weston, professor and director of LaGuardia’s Theater Program and Stefanie Sertich, professor of Theater on the fall theater production, and says being invited to perform at the KCACTF Region 1 is a huge honor for LaGuardia students and “a testament to the hard work of both our students and our faculty.” “This is a major achievement for our students and faculty because this means their work has the potential to win national awards,” said Professor Caldwell. “This really speaks to the strength of our theater program, and to the dedication of both teachers and students.”
