New York State Assemblymember Patricia Fahy to Give Keynote Address at Commencement


New York State Assemblymember Patricia Fahy (District 109), Chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee, will give the keynote address at the 2023 LaGuardia Community College Commencement. The ceremony, for the more than 2,000 members of LaGuardia’s graduating class, will be held on Wednesday, June 21 on the Quad of Queens College.


First elected in 2012, Assemblymember Fahy is a leading advocate for job creation, environmental conservation, and quality education. In addition to chairing the Higher Education Committee, she serves on the Environmental Conservation, Codes, Economic Development, and Tourism Committees.

LaGuardia Red Hawks Day on the Greenway Plaza

Today, LaGuardia Community College hosted its fifth Greenway Plaza event to celebrate the LaGuardia Red Hawks and encourage students to exercise their minds and their bodies. 


Students, faculty and staff participated in a variety of events including ping pong, soccer, and basketball. On May 24, the Greenway Plaza will feature a Jobs Fair, hosted in partnership with Hispanic Federation, CCPD and Casa de las Américas Join us!

Fresh Vegetables, Bread, and Eggs Available for Students Through LaGuardia CARES 

 

LaGuardia CARES is distributing fresh vegetables, bread, and eggs every Monday through June 26, while supplies last. Faculty are encouraged to bring their classes and spread the word. Distribution is made through the LaGuardia CARES office in C-107. LaGuardia CARES can be reached at (718) 482-5135 or [email protected].  

Changes to On-Campus COVID Testing  


The COVID Testing Site in E-150 will be reducing their hours of operation starting May 22, 20223 and will cease operation on June 15, 2023.  The new hours of operation for on-campus COVID testing will be Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. 


For those whose schedules are not accommodated by the new COVID Testing Site hours, rapid testing kits will be provided at Health Service in MB-40 on Mondays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 12 to 3 p.m.

LaGuardia Humanitarian Initiative Student Conference and Showcase Scheduled May 24



LaGuardia Humanitarian Initiative (LHI) is an inclusive platform for students, faculty, and staff foregrounding pedagogical inquiry, civic engagement, and academic service learning, facilitated by a year-long college-wide inquiry of a global issue as addressed by the United Nations. Through partnerships with local and global NGOs, students gain access to career opportunities and professional development workshops. On May 24, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., LHI will host its annual conference and showcase, featuring keynote speaker Prof. Raysa S. Rodriguez, chief program & policy officer for FPWA and adjunct professor at Columbia University. The all-day event will also include a student talent show at 11:30 a.m. at the Poolside Café and an afternoon session focusing on LHI student activism and LaGuardia CARES. See full schedule here.

SAVE THE DATE: LaGuardia Faculty and Staff Years of Service Ceremony, June 1


LaGuardia students, faculty and staff are invited to celebrate fellow employees who are celebrating significant milestones in their careers at the college. The college will host a recognition ceremony and reception on June 1, 10 a.m. in the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center, where employees will be celebrating 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 years of service with the college. LaGuardia Professors Elected to University Faculty Senate Positions


The results of CUNY’s University Faculty Senate (UFS) Elections are in, and LaGuardia Community College professors have earned significant leadership roles in the university-wide group. Congratulations to Professor Hugo Fernandez, Humanities (top left), on being elected to the UFS Executive committee as a Member-At-Large, and congratulations to Professor Patricia Sokolski, Humanities (bottom left), on being elected LaGuardia UFS Senator.


Alternate Senators elected are Professor Faith Armstrong (Health Sciences) and Professor Eric Conte (Education and Language Acquisition).

Queens Tech Breakfast Held at LaGuardia 


On Tuesday, May 9, LaGuardia Community College hosted the Queens Tech Council for their Spring 2023 Queens Tech Breakfast. The breakfast, organized by the Queens Chamber of Commerce included a panel discussion with Council Member Julie Won, Octavius Moore (Tech: NYC), and Kathirvel Kumararaja (DevJee Inc) which highlighted the need in fostering tech companies and their growth in Queens. During the event, LaGuardia had the opportunity to showcase NYDesigns, the College's design and tech incubator space. 

LAGUARDIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION

Amazin’ Scholars Recognized at Citi Field Event 


The Amazin’ Mets Foundation hosted the Amazin’ Scholars Recognition Event on Tuesday at Citi Field. Eleven LaGuardia students are recipients of the Amazin’ Foundation Scholarship, which is jointly funded by the Amazin’ Mets Foundation and the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation. The Fund supports students enrolled at LAGCC and Queensborough Community College, along with three other local colleges. Scholarship recipients and their guests, along with LaGuardia Community College Foundation staff, Amazin’ Mets Foundation staff, and scholars and guests from the other colleges, were invited to see the Mets take on the Tampa Bay Rays.

CUNY Preferred Name Request Form


If you wish to select a preferred name for internal CUNY purposes (in situations in which your legal name is not required) please complete and submit the Preferred Name Request Form to LaGuardia’s Department of Human Resources.  This form can also be accessed in Human Resources’ Employee Forms section, in the General Forms listing, by title. A preferred name may be requested for use in College e-mail, and unofficial documents such as College directories, course catalogs, and other internal documents. Please be advised that a preferred name will not be used for payroll, benefits, and employment verification purposes. No documentation is required to have a preferred name recorded.

  • Even though construction in the Library continues, we have plenty of seating available. Other than the first floor, the Mezzanine is still accessible to students by the side staircases and the elevator. The Thomson Reading Room on the second floor is open and accessible by elevator.
