Campus Visit Do's and Don'ts
Nothing helps students determine how a college “fits” better than personal experience, which is why college visits should be a top priority during the college admissions processparticularly if a college tracks demonstrated interest and a college visit is noted as part of your admissions file. Additionally, the information you gather during college visits will help immeasurably when it comes time to write those important “Why This School?” supplemental essays. Before you hit the next quad, check out these Campus Visit Do’s and Don’tsthey’ll help you make the most of your time on campus.
In Defense of the Liberal Arts
In recent years, a number of very small liberal arts colleges have shuttered, which may have some parents thinking that pre-professional programs at large universities are the smartest way to go when it comes to ROI or future job security. But when asked, the skills that employers want most in their new hires—written communication skills, collaboration, critical thinking, ethical judgment, to name a few—are the types of skills fostered in the liberal arts environment. And since the jobs of tomorrow are likely jobs that we can't even conceive of today, it makes sense to develop flexible and creative thinkers for the future. Still not convinced? A new study reveals some perhaps surprising data on the practical upsides of a liberal arts education.

ACT/SAT Testing Schedules
When should your student sign up to take the ACT or SAT? The answer depends on what grade they are in, and what the deadlines are for the schools they want to apply to. But the short answer is: earlier than you think! That's because more and more schools are offering priority deadlines, which means your student will likely be applying to schools with November (even October!) deadlines if they want priority access to things like merit aid and scholarships.

In an ideal world, students will have time to prepare for each exam, utilizing previous scores to inform test prep strategies. Having test scores is also the only way you can make a solid college list, as determining your best-fit schools will include an evaluation of your test scores. Every student's plan will be different but, in general, a wise approach is to take one exam in the fall of junior year, with a second exam in the spring. For juniors who have missed the fall test dates, signing up for an early spring exam (the deadlines are listed below!) should be a priority, so that you will have scores in time to prepare for a second June exam (if necessary). This will still give you time to firm up your college list before summer essay and application writing begins.
How to Spend Your Summer
Speaking of summer, you may have heard headline-making story about the high school NASA intern who discovered a new planet and thought, "yikes, how is my kid's summer job bagging groceries going to get HER into college?" You may suddenly find yourself tempted to shell out thousands of dollars for a fancy summer program on an illustrious college campus or a far-flung locale. And while colleges DO care how students spend their summers (at least part of them), you don't have to use the word "curate" when it comes to helping your student find a summer a ctivity that works for them. We love to help our students develop engaging summer plans, but some initial ideas to consider include:

  • Jobs (schools see fewer applicants that work, so those long hours as a cashier or waitress won't go unnoticed)
  • Internships
  • Activities that further a passion of yours
  • College Visits
