Supporting The Arts & Arts Councils Everywhere

Volume 4 No. 42| November 18, 2022

Notes from the Editor:

This is the time of year I remind readers to shop local, shop small business.

This year I'm going to toot my own horn and ask you to remember that Arts Blast is about as small a business as you can get (one human, one cat). If you have an event coming up, or something artsy to sell or teach, how about advertising it in Arts Blast! It would be much appreciated!

Here's that popular link to the St. John webcams. Yes, it really is that gorgeous.

The Vero Beach Pipes and Drums' annual fundraiser concert November 18, 7:00 p.m., is at First Presbyterian Church, 520 Royal Palm Boulevard, in Vero Beach. Admission is free; a $10 donation is suggested at the door.

The Vero Beach Pipes & Drums is a 501 c-3 organization that has been bringing traditional Scottish/Irish and American music to the Vero Beach Community for nearly ten years. VBPD is comprised of volunteer local musicians, retired Fire, Police and Veteran who carry the musical tradition to various events through donations only. By supporting the Vero Beach Pipes and Drums in their fundraising efforts, donors also help the band in its goal of promoting Scottish and Celtic culture and values throughout the community.

The Vero Beach Pipes and Drums is a community-based Pipe Band consisting of bagpipers and drummers from throughout the Treasure Coast. Their goal is to perform, entertain, educate, and bring Irish and Scottish culture and values to the community. Through education, practice, performance, and competition, the Vero Beach Pipes and Drums aim to enhance their community through standards of excellence at all levels. Under the direction of Pipe Major Jacob Craig, Drum Major John Thompson, and Pipe Sergeant Patrick McCormick, they are a fully accredited 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization embracing Scottish culture as well as traditional dress and values.

Alex TheodoreThe Society for the Preservation of The Great American Songbook's

2022-2023 Young Artist Instrumentalist of the year!

Alex Theodore is a senior at The King’s Academy and has been performing in the Smith Family Conservatory of the Arts since ninth grade. He discovered his passion for music at an early age as he took piano lessons beginning at the age of six. In the fifth grade, Alex joined the Calypso Cats, a band club where he played the steel drums and performed at events across South Florida. Throughout middle school, Alex was involved in the band program and started to learn how to play percussion as well as jazz piano.

It wasn’t until high school where Alex’s talents really began to shine. He played piano and percussion in the Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, and The King’s Regiment Marching Band. Throughout his time in these ensembles, Alex rose to the top with his musicianship and leadership abilities. During his senior year, he was named Drum Major of The King’s Regiment. He has been a featured soloist with the Jazz Ensemble at the annual Night of Jazz Concerts. Alex was also selected by The King’s Academy faculty as the Conservatory Prefect (student leader) to provide service and direction for the Fine Arts Program.

Alex and four of his peers used their love for the American Songbook to create their own jazz quintet. This group, called The Annie Matot Jazz Quintet, has performed the Jazz standards across the state of Florida at high-end restaurants, private clubs, charitable events, outdoor concerts, and weddings. Alex’s piano playing is the glue that makes this quintet dynamic. They have quickly developed a following in the South Florida community and have become a highly sought-after group.

Alex was recently awarded the Young Artist Instrumentalist of the Year Award 2022 – 2023 from The Society for the Preservation of the Great American Songbook. Throughout his musical career, Alex’s passion for piano has only grown with time as he has developed his skills. This passion was also shaped by his teachers: Jan Lewan, Rich Switzer, and Wes Lowe, who all helped in cultivating and guiding Alex in his musical abilities. Playing piano has always been a source of joy and excitement for Alex and has provided him a deeper love and appreciation for music.
