Work with Mary Lee

"The challenges of today's healthcare environment mean that you need to do more with less yet remain quality focused in a highly regulated industry. You promote your star performers then realize they're not prepared. They get frustrated, you end up doing their work and worst case scenario - they quit and you've lost your investment in them. I deliver keynote speeches on the value and "how to" of mindful leadership as well as train and develop new managers, teams and executives so that you can go back to what you do best and they can be productive and effective."
~ Mary Lee Gannon

The Book

"Starting Over"

Mary Lee's first book illustrates her personal turnaround as a stay-at-home mother, with four children under seven-years-old, who endured a divorce that took she and the children from the country club life to public assistance. From there, within a short time, she worked to the level of CEO, directing three hospital foundations over the last 16 years each with assets of up to $26 million.

Connection. It is what generates all the fulfilling emotions such as love, happiness, excitement, joy, compassion, empathy. Like it or not it is also what generate business and a collaborative work environment. When you can connect with someone trust is present. And from trust openness blossoms and a bond develops. Sometimes you meet someone with whom you have an immediate connection because chemistry and similarities are present. Sometimes you have to peel back the onion to discover the connection. Either way connection is essential to fulfillment in life and in business.

Listening skills are a tenet to connection. Are you a good listener? When you listen are you already formulating in your mind what you are going to say when they take a breath? If what they are sharing involves pain or misery are you quick to give a "fix-it" strategy? Or can you sit with them in the space of their difficulties, allowing them to share, inviting them to share more without it making you uncomfortable?

Being able to sit with people in pain is often more than enough. Can you allow your teenager to tell you how awful it feels not to be understood and ask them to tell you more? Do you ask your prospective clients what the biggest challenge is in their business and say, "I bet that's frustrating and difficult to manage. How does it affect your team?" before you formulate a solution. When a peer tells you about difficulty at home do you say, "That must be hurtful. What do you do when that happens?" or brush it off with "You should see my wife after she's had a hard day."

When you can sit with your friends, colleagues and clients in the space of their pain you build trust and connection. But it takes self-awareness and self-regulation not to run away or push them through it quickly so you don't have to be reminded of similar challenges. When you can actually walk your friends, colleagues and clients into that space and help them to realize what they are afraid to feel - you have gold.

Practical Case Scenarios:

Imagine if you asked your prospective client, "If you were to name the one thing that holds your business back from being on the front page of trade journals for your industry what would it be? And what has not doing that cost you?" Then you just listened and all you said was, "Tell me more." instead of "Let me tell you what we can do for you."

Imagine if you said to your work colleague, "I bet it was a real let down not to get that promotion. What do you think happened?" instead of "He sucks up all the time - everyone knows you were better suited for the job."

Imagine if you said to your middle school daughter, "Yeah I can't believe she did that either. What do you think she was thinking?" instead of "You don't need her."

Mindful management of yourself married with a healthy curiosity invites in connection and builds trust.
