Suzano sets fourth global price hike for BEK pulp in 2025, effective April 1- Brazilian hardwood pulp producer Suzano started to inform clients on Thursday March 27 of a new price increase for bleached eucalyptus kraft (BEK) pulp sales in April. This is the fourth price increase set by the company in the year.

Fastmarkets has learned that the company is setting price increases of $20 per tonne for Asia and $60 per tonne for North America and Europe, with list prices for the latter defined at $1,280 per tonne. The company did not disclose list prices for North America and Asia.

Suzano is reportedly increasing prices based on the same market fundamentals that supported previous price hikes. These include the shutdown of Chenming’s production sites in China, a large number of scheduled downtime periods taken at pulp mills in Brazil and the higher production of dissolving pulp (DP) at Bracell’s Lençóis Paulista mill, which announced an extended run in one of its flexible lines until July — removing around 650,000 tonnes of BEK capacity traded in the market this year.

Pratt fire sparks mixed demand, tariff concerns keep US tons moving- US domestic demand for old corrugated containers (OCC) has remained mostly in balance so far in March, while improved demand for mixed paper from major consumer Pratt Industries firmed up prices again in the week to Friday March 21, after a fire at its Louisiana mill, sources told Fastmarkets.

Export demand for US tons was steady through the month as buyers attempted to get ahead of possible tariffs that the Trump administration is set to enforce on April 2 on imports from Canada and Mexico. The US-imposed tariffs initially were to go into effect in February, and were delayed until March, and stalled again until April. Recent trade data from the US government show that Canada and Mexico upped their buys of US recovered paper at the start of the year, stocking up on tons ahead of additional costs related to tariffs.

Fastmarkets Viewpoint: The impact of tariffs — and uncertainty — on the US containerboard and corrugated markets-The Trump administration’s aggressive and rapidly evolving tariff policy has wreaked havoc in markets, sent consumer sentiment plunging and upended economic outlooks. With the administration’s stance on tariffs on Mexico and Canada at times whipsawing by the day and little hard post-inauguration economic data yet available, it is extremely difficult to nail down the final shape and impact of trade policy. Despite the lack of clarity, a continued emphasis on tariffs could prove highly consequential for the US corrugated and containerboard markets in 2025 and beyond, and heavy policy uncertainty looks to be a key part of the outlook in any scenario.
