Celebrating our Heritage:
Going Home
By Jason Watt, CU, CLU
As we get ready to celebrate Heritage Day here in Alberta, and Edmonton prepares for my favourite annual festival – the Heritage Festival – thoughts of coming to Canada and leaving Canada are fresh on my mind. I had a conversation last week about leaving Canada.

As we celebrate our roots over the August long weekend, we’re also looking ahead to changes coming to the CFP® Certification Education Program.
Most significantly, a post-secondary education requirement will be introduced in the next couple of years, so if you don’t have a degree and want the CFP designation, you should be in touch with Penny or Kelsey today at
877-934-5577.
We’ll be rolling out our new Core Curriculum in September with live instruction and self-paced options available. The new Core Curriculum will include some new topics, like behavioural finance and more on personal finance, while the more complex areas will move to the new Advanced Curriculum (available early 2020).
for details.
Candidates pursuing the Direct to CFP® Path will now take the Core and Advanced Curricula through BCC, complete the new Introduction to Professional Ethics (IPE) and CFP® Professional Education Program (PEP) through FP Canada, and then write the CFP® Exam.
If you’ve already started your studies and won’t be finished by November 2019, get in touch and see your options for continuing in the new program – Contact

We all know how beneficial exercise is to our physical health, but did you know that exercising is good for your brain too? With aerobic exercise, the increased blood flow to your brain directly benefits the health and development of the brain cells and blood vessels, as well as improves our mood and sleep which play a role in our cognitive functioning. Take advantage of these fleeting summer days to strap on your runners or hop on a bike to get the blood pumping!

LLQP Overview
Bob Watt, EPC
In my continued efforts to shed some light on the LLQP insurance licensing program, this month I will be providing information about what I have slotted in as the 3rd course in the licensing program. This course is called Segregated Funds and Annuities. When I first heard reference to the fact that LLQP would be modularized back in late 2012, this course was referred to as Investments, Segregated Funds and Annuities. Now as life insurance agents it is understood that we do not have the authority or expertise to provide investment advice unless we are dually licensed under provincial securities requirements. Noting this fact and to avoid giving life insurance agents the impression that they have the authority to give investment advise and sell investment products the word “Investment” was dropped from the title. The first chapter of this course talks about all investment options that Canadians might use to achieve their financial goals. That chapter covers all those options at a very basic level. It then delves into the 2 investment products specific to Life Insurance, Segregated Funds and Annuities. The course goes into significant detail about these insurance related investments. Segregated funds are described as a mutual fund with an insurance component which is somewhat accurate but there is much more to them, which could be precisely the reason why the very mention of this course instills fears in the average student. The same might hold true for annuities which for me seem so simple but are so difficult for many to understand. Even the most advanced securities professionals who end up having to get life licensed struggle with these topics. I have been known to advise people to “dumb down” a little and forget what they know and learn what you need to as if you know nothing, tough for some people to do.
Next month I will talk about the Life Insurance module and then you will not hear from me with regards to LLQP until a make some comments in November or December about the next (6th) edition updates.
