OCTOBER 2025

MOURNING THE LOSS OF OUR ARTISTIC CROSSWALKS

It was a short-lived but enthusiastic love affair. Completed just in time for Memorial Day, these crosswalks put a smile on the faces of countless residents and visitors alike.

You are likely aware that in late August, under orders from the state government, the Florida DOT ordered that all "non-standard" traffic markings on crosswalks and intersections throughout the state be removed. The timeline for that removal was very short, and the state threatened consequences for non-compliance that had the impact of making pushback or legal challenges all but impossible. The state cited traffic safety as the rationale for the action.

The problem is that the actual traffic safety data suggest that such intersections and crosswalks are safer than the "standard" ones. The city was forced to paint over our new public art.
