Message from the Chair

Dear Cancer Prevention and Management SIG Members,

We hope that your semester is going well! We are looking forward to the in-person ISBNPA 2023 meeting in Uppsala, Sweden. ISBNPA is pleased to present not only one, but two formats for the upcoming conference: one in-person meeting in Uppsala (June 14-17, 2023), and one virtual meeting in late September 2023.

The regular abstracts, symposia, and Dare2Share submission portal is open for the in-person conference, and we are looking to sponsor your session! If you are thinking of submitting a symposium focused on cancer prevention and management or are looking for other members to collaborate on a symposium together, please reach out to us. The submission deadline is October 28, 2022 for symposia and December 7, 2022 for regular abstracts and Dare2Share submissions. Additional details will be shared shortly on the main ISBNPA website regarding the virtual meeting which has its own submission portal.

In this edition of the newsletter, we are continuing with Collaboration Corner where members can connect with other SIG members for distinct expertise on a project, grant and manuscript collaborations, and community connections, as some examples. We encourage you to submit in this area to engage members within our SIG. We have some exciting collaborations from our members featured in this edition.

Finally, please join us in welcoming our newest member, Jordan Curry (PhD student) from the Hull York Medical School, in the role of the social media officer. You’ll hear all the latest buzz about our SIG on our Twitter page, @isbnpa_cpm.

That’s it for now and we look forward to sponsoring your proposed sessions.

Linda Trinh, PhD

New Exec Team Member Spotlight

Jordan Curry is a PhD student at the Hull York Medical School, UK. Jordan's background is in Sports Science and Clinical Exercise Physiology. Through his doctoral research, he is combining his interests in exercise oncology and digital technology. Alongside his education, he has actively worked in the health and fitness sector and as a research assistant on several projects surrounding physical activity and digital technology for those living with and beyond cancer.

Collaboration Corner and Special Recognition

UK-Canada Globalink

CPM SIG members, Dr. Linda Trinh (CPM Chair) from the University of Toronto and Dr. Rebecca Beeken (CPM Deputy Chair) from the University of Leeds are engaging in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research by participating in the UK-Canada Globalink doctoral exchange scheme. Dr. Beeken’s doctoral student, William Goodman will be carrying out a 12-week research project focused on examining the longitudinal trends of sedentary behaviour and physical activity, and the associations with cancer-related symptoms such as fatigue and distress, quality of life, and contextual factors in prostate cancer survivors. This project will aid in designing individually tailored interventions for prostate cancer survivors which could help individuals self-manage their own health, acknowledged as a key priority for both the UK and Canada. The Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education at the University of Toronto and Dr. Linda Trinh are thrilled to be hosting William Goodman in Winter 2022 and look forward to this collaboration.

Cindy Forbes Recognized as 2022 Top Developing Researcher

Having brought in more than £1m in research funding in 2021 and starting to establish the University of Hull as an emerging hub for Exercise Oncology, CPM Member, Dr. Cindy Forbes was awarded the "2022 Top Developing Researcher" by the Faculty of Health Science at the University of Hull. Congratulations, Dr. Forbes!

Trainee Research Spotlight

Renée Bultijnck, PhD from Ghent University (Belgium), successfully defended her PhD on ‘Optimizing rehabilitation interventions in men with prostate cancer receiving androgen deprivation therapy’. Interested in her PhD results? Read her #thesisthread HERE. In October 2022, she started a postdoctoral fellowship at Ghent University, where she is studying patient reported outcomes in men with metastatic prostate cancer. She is also leading an ISBNPA seed grant project, titled, "Moving through cancer: a proposed framework of sedentary behavior and physical activity pathways to guide clinical practice." Congratulations, Dr. Bultijnck!

2022 Cancer Prevention and Management Early Career Researcher Seed Funding Award

The CPM SIG is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2022 Early Career Researcher Seed Funding award, Emily Hill, PhD, RDN. Dr. Hill is a registered dietitian and Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Denver, CO and a current CPM member. Her one-year project, titled, "Cancer survivors as stakeholders in the design of a survivorship nutrition intervention for integration into an established exercise oncology program" will focus on collaborating with people living with and beyond cancer to co-create a 12-week evidence-based nutrition curriculum to meet their unique needs and preferences. Congratulations, Dr. Hill!

NIH Nutrition as Prevention for Improved Cancer Health Outcomes

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Disease Prevention (ODP) held a three-day Pathways to Prevention Workshop on Nutrition as Prevention for Improved Cancer Health Outcomes in July 2022. Recordings from all three days are available on the ODP website HERE. An unbiased, independent panel developed a draft report to summarize the workshop discussions and identify future research priorities. This report is open for public comment through October 28, 2022 - simply email NIHP2P@mail.nih.gov to submit your comments.
