Mobile Phones

Why have so many people under 50 in affluent countries been developing colorectal cancer in recent decades? De-Kun Li, a senior epidemiologist at Kaiser Permanente, offered a new possibility: carrying a cell phone below the waist. When placed in a pocket below the belt, the phone transmits RF radiation into the abdomen. In his small pilot study, he found that those who carried a phone below the waist were four times more likely to develop colorectal tumors. Solution: Try not carry your mobile phone on your person.

Diet

More than 1 in 5 of new gastrointestinal cancer cases globally were attributable to suboptimal dietary intake, according to a recent study in Gastroenterology. Excessive consumption of processed meats and sugars and insufficient fruit and vegetable intake were the leading dietary risk factors. In addition, the number of diet-related cases doubled from 1990 to 2018. Whereas in a JAMA Network Open study, participants with high adherence to a Mediterranean diet had a lower risk for obesity-related gastric cancers than those with low adherence.

Steve: There's a reason why Bonnie and I harp on the fact that it is so critical to take care of yourself as a young person, especially during fertility years. It's not just that we pass along genes to our offspring, but we also pass along our epigenes. A study from Nature Cancer echoes this.

According to the scientists, a person's lifetime risk for cancer may begin before they are even born. They identified two distinct epigenetic states that arise during development and are linked to cancer risk.

One of these states is associated with a lower lifetime risk while the other is associated with a higher lifetime risk. If cancer does develop in the lower risk state, it is more likely to be a liquid tumor, such as leukemia or lymphoma. If cancer develops in the higher risk state, it is more likely to be a solid tumor, such as lung or prostate cancer.

Because most cancers occur later in life and are understood as diseases of mutation, or genetics, there hasn't been a deep focus on how development might shape cancer risk. These findings change that.

Epigenetics are processes that affect how and when the instructions in DNA are carried out. Problems with epigenetics can derail cellular quality control processes, enabling sick cells to survive and spread. In layman terms, this is negative messaging or information that is provided to our genes.

What causes negative epigenetic messaging to our genes? Poor diet and lifestyle choices. Young people tend to take their health for granted and take more risks with diet and lifestyle. Unfortunately, this can have a detrimental effect on their epigenes and affect future offspring with regard to cancer risk.

This case report concerns a group of female clients with osteopenia or osteoporosis. Their individual needs always differ, but the impetus for a consultation is very much the same. Many come to see Steve and Bonnie because they are concerned about their post-DEXA scan diagnosis, concerned about taking bone drugs, and want to know if there are alternatives.

The first thing they explain is that DEXA scans only assess bone mass. If you have a small frame, you are very often categorized with osteopenia right off the bat. However, unless the DEXA scan is accompanied by a trabecular bone score (TBS), which is very rare, there is no assessment of bone quality. Bone quality is just as important as bone mass. Many women with good bone quality and less bone mass never fracture.

If a DEXA with TBS is not available in your area, there are two blood tests to assess how well you are forming bone and resorbing bone to ascertain bone quality. If needed, we can lay out the possibilities for building, maintaining, and preventing breakdown of bone. In most cases, there is so much that can be done with diet and lifestyle. For the rare instance where medication is the only option, we know how to help you minimize the negative effects.

"In 2021 I did a DEXA bone scan and was told I had Osteoporosis in (left femoral neck). My doctor at the time prescribed weekly dose of Alendronate (a bisphosphonate). I did it for about a 1.5 years. I hated being on it - didn’t tolerate it well. After a visit with you in 2023, I dumped the Alendronate and started on a supplement combination you suggested.

I’m happy to report that I had a follow up bone scan at Northwestern yesterday and it came back with NO Osteoporosis at this time. So there was no regression from stopping the Alendronate med and switching to the supplements. In fact, the diagnosis changed from Osteoporosis to Osteopenia. Northwestern did both DEXA and TBS score (which was in normal range). I read the piece in your weekly newsletter on the importance of the TBS score as well as a DEXA scan.
