Topics, Candidates and Panelists--Update on the US House Fisheries Debate in Kodiak on October 8, 2024
KODIAK, AK, October 1, 2024 — On Tuesday, October 8th at 7pm at the Gerald C. Wilson Auditorium, Kodiak, AK, the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce & KMXT Public Radio 100.1 FM will host a fisheries debate for candidates running for Alaska’s US House of Representatives. Candidates confirmed to participate in person include incumbent Representative Mary Peltola (D), Nick Begich (R) and John Wayne Howe(I).
Panelists asking the candidate questions during the fisheries debate include Matt Alward, President of United Fishermen of Alaska (UFA) and Mary Beth Loewen, President of the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce. Terry Haines, KMXT Morning Host and Alaska Fisheries Report, will moderate the debate and Davis Hovey, KMXT News Director, will be the timekeeper.
Topics for questions submitted by members of the public and seafood industry for this year’s fisheries debate are identified in alphabetical order:
1. Comparing resource extraction industries in Alaska
2. Economic health of the seafood industry, coastal communities and the State of Alaska
3. Ensuring Alaskan seafood priorities are achieved in Washington, D.C. Getting down to business: issues, committees, staffing
4. Federal funding priorities for fisheries management, surveys and research
5. Federal vs. State management of salmon in AK (example Cook Inlet Salmon)
6. Improving efficacy and timeliness of Fisheries disaster relief programs
7. Integrating fisheries into the farm bill and USDA Programs
8. Magnuson Stevens Act Reauthorization
9. Role of Congress in addressing bycatch
10. Subsistence Priority
11. Understanding and mitigating climate change impacts on Alaskan fisheries.
For over 30 years fisheries issues have been the focus for candidate debates held in Kodiak. Alaska’s seafood industry plays a critical role in the state’s economy, directly employs more than 48,000 workers annually in Alaska and contributes $6 billion to Alaska’s economy.
The US House Fisheries Debate will be held in person in Kodiak and broadcast live on KMXT 100.1FM, streamed at kmxt.org, made available statewide on public radio stations through Alaska Public Media and live streamed through the Kodiak Chamber’s website, kodiakchamber.org.
