New Perspectives to Be Offered at AHAI Affiliate Leadership Conference
By Greg Bates, Special to AHAI - In search of some ideas to revamp AHAI's annual meeting, Jim Clare traveled to Minnesota two years ago to sit in on the State of Hockey's yearly conference.

Clare, who also used his home state of Massachusetts for guidance, came away with plenty of valuable ideas that he's since implemented in Illinois.  This will mark the third year the new and improved AHAI Affiliate Leadership Conference (AALC) will take place. The event will be held at the Westin Chicago Northwest in Itasca on Saturday, June 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Clare loves the direction the AALC has gone recently as leaders of affiliate groups throughout the state gather for one day to learn effective ways to run their organization and mingle with those who share their same position at other clubs.

"It seems to be getting better each year as we learn more and get feedback from the community," said Clare, the AALC Committee Chairman. "We're trying to structure it and make sure the content is valuable to them. ... I think the program we have laid out is the best we've laid out since we did this restructuring. I think that's just lessons learned from previous ones." READ MORE>>

New Season Approaches: Some High School Rule Changes and A Date to Remember
By Jack Weinberg, AHAI High School Committee Chair - The most important new rule to be aware of in High School hockey this year is the minimum player requirement. All boys high school teams will need to have a minimum of 14 distinct skaters plus at least 1 goalie  to qualify and receive a certified roster from the AHAI Registrar for the upcoming fall season. This increase came as a recommendation to the AHAI board from the High School Committee and was primarily adopted to help increase the safety of the players. There have been many instances where due to injuries and suspensions that available players for a game have diminished to an "unsafe" number. The minimum must be reached before the team plays their first game of the season or they may not play  as they will not have a certified roster. READ MORE>>

Chicago Blackhawks Special Hockey Program Provides a Place to Play for All Abilities
By Greg Bates, Special to AHAI - For years, the Chicago Blackhawks Special Hockey (CBSH) program has been a hit.  Its three locations around Chicagoland provided those with cognitive disabilities an opportunity to play the sport.  With so much interest, the program wanted to expand. On Jan. 1 of this year, CBSH added a fourth location at Tilt Studio (Rink Side) in Gurnee.

"We're growing it to the north because we've got rinks at Center Ice in Glen Ellyn, Arctic Ice in Orland Park and MB in Chicago," CBSH Director Melanie Freeman said. "We were kind of missing a presence in Lake County, and we're working on growing that." CBSH, which was formerly known as Tomahawks Special Hockey, won't be stopping at moving just into Gurnee. This coming September, Rockford will be the program's fifth spot. READ MORE>>

Spring Cleaning - Out with the Old and in with the New
In this case, we mean out with old hockey habits and in with the new ones!  Spring might be the perfect time to clean out your old hockey equipment, but it also could be the perfect time to set some new goals, bring in some new skills, and start fresh. Take this quote from Hockey great Wayne Gretzky.  "If sport has a high point of the year, it must be the first week of spring. When I was growing up, I used to love this time of year. It was when I put my hockey equipment away and was absolutely ecstatic to see the end of the hockey season." We're not suggesting you halt your hockey game, but it could be a great time to start using a cognitive training program like The Hockey IntelliGym.
