Canepa Koch Wine Cellars is a partnership between Mark Canepa and Neil Koch. Together Mark and Neil have over 25 years of wine industry experience. Mark and Neil have known each other since 2004 and both were recruited by Seguin Moreau (Cooperage in Napa Valley) and they both took Sales positions. They quickly realized that if they combined their skills and resources they could launch something exciting. Their goal is to create wines that are well rounded, enjoyable and affordable.

Canepa Koch Wine Cellars strives to make wines with incredible depth, richness and length. They do this by implementing small lot winemaking techniques including small lot fermentations, berry sorting and minimal fermentation intervention. Basically, they let the vineyards they select speak for themselves and the end result is selected for “the dude”.

CO-PROPRIETOR: MARK CANEPA

Mark has been in the wine business since 2004 and since 2010 with Seguin Moreau, one of the premiere cooperages in the world. He works daily with winemakers in the Napa Valley and greater bay area to select the specific Oak barrels for their wines.

CO-PROPRIETOR AND WINEMAKER: NEIL KOCH

Neil has over 12 years of wine industry experience including 6 years working in the production side. He trained under Philip Melka at Seavey Vineyards, Bryant Family and Vineyard 29. Neil has also produced Pinot Noir under “The Line Wines” Label.

2021 RUSSIAN RIVER CHARDONNAY

If you've had The Dude Cabernet, Pinot Noir or Sauvignon Blanc, then you know what to expect here: right down the middle, high-end tasting, California wine at a terrific value price. Here we start with 100% Chardonnay, picked richly ripe and full of apple, pear and stone-fruit goodness. Creamy in feel, richly flavored, smooth and easy on the finish, this is a terrific Rombauer Chardonnay alternative at a great value price.

THE DUDE

2018 RUTHERFORD

SAUVIGNON BLANC

The 2018 “the dude” Rutherford Sauvignon Blanc is a stunner…

This is our first vintage of Sauvignon Blanc from the iconic Rutherford AVA in the heart of the Napa Valley. We sourced from a vineyard off of Mee Lane in Rutherford. The grapes were picked early, while acids where still bright, then whole cluster pressed. Fermentation was in stainless steel and kept cold to preserve aromatics. The 2018 vintage is crisp and bright, with flavors of pink grapefruit and aromas of citrus blossom.

225 cases were produced.

THE DUDE

2021 RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY PINOT NOIR

Our 2021 The Dude Russian River Pinot Noir is sourced from 2 vineyard sources within the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County, southwest of the city of Sebastopol, in an area known as the Sebastopol Hills. Located just 9 miles from the Pacific Ocean and featuring the ideal sandy loam soils, which make for an ideal climatic for beautiful expressive, cool-climate Pinot Noir. These 2 western sloping vineyards feature Calera, Swan, Dijon 777 and Pommard 4 clones, all of which complement each other in the final blend. The Pinot Noir grapes were harvested at night, hand sorted and gently de-stemmed to small open-top fermenters. After a 7 day “cold soak” to extract maximum fruit character, and gentle maceration through fermentation, the wine was drained without pressing and aged in 35% new French oak barrels for 16 months.

This Pinot Noir possesses deep aromas of wild strawberries and ripe raspberries accentuated with exotic notes of sandalwood and rose petal. Rich and luscious palate it is focused with layers of ripe red fruits, fresh forest floor and fine-grained tannins that linger through the finish.

THE DUDE

 2020 NAPA VALLEY RED BLEND

The 2020 “the dude” was a blend of fruit from Calistoga, Coombsville, Rutherford, and Howell Mountain. The wine spent 16 months in 50% New French oak cooperage.

A dark, exotic blend nearly splitting at the seams with fruit and spice notes. The wine exhibits a completely opaque dark purple hue in the glass with a violet halo. Layered aromas suggest black currant, blueberry, pencil shavings and fresh leather. The dense, concentrated palate is marked by macerated blackberry, plum reduction, baking spices, loam, cocoa nib and crushed river rock.

ABRAM'S BRIDGE

2020 NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Winemaker Neil Koch has worked with superstar Philippe Melka at benchmark Napa Cab houses like Seavey Vineyards, Bryant Family and Vineyard 29 and helped make the bold whites and Chardonnays of Lewis Cellars as assistant winemaker there. Between his connections with many best-of-the-best Napa Cab winemakers and experience as a professional grape broker, Neil is able to consistently source breathtakingly good raw materials for his own wines under The Dude and Abram's Bridge labels. And never more so than in vintage 2020, when even very, very, high-end fruit was sold off and barrels of completely untainted juice normally destined for $200+ wines was available to guys, like Neil, who knew who to ask and could be trusted to never reveal his sources.

The result is a an utterly luxurious and stylish Napa Cabernet that surely smells and tastes like a $75+ bottle but will cost you a lot less. It's 93% Cabernet Sauvignon from prime sites on the valley floor and also from Howell Mountain. Add in 7% Cabernet Franc from a name you'd certainly know on Prichard Hill and 15 months in 35% new French oak casks and something special is ready to land in your glass. With excellent lushness and depth to the dark blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry fruit and plenty of spice and dusty chocolate as well, it’s inviting to sip solo now, built to stand up to rich meats, and will improve for at least a decade. Truly outstanding value.

2020 Howell Mountain

Cabernet Sauvignon

Organically farmed, and located about 1200 ft on the slopes of Howell Mountain, this vineyard source is comprised of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Yields are typically less than 2 tons per acre, insuring intense and concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon.

Grapes were harvested at night, hand sorted and de-stemmed. After a 7-day cold soak, and 2 week fermentation with gentle maceration the wine was moved into French oak, 45% new oak. The wine aged for 16th months before bottling.

The wine is saturated in purple/plum color, and followed by classic Howell Mountain notes of sagebrush and bay leaf as well as ample blackcurrant and plum fruits, graphite, smoke tobacco and earth. Gorgeous on the palate, with full-bodied richness yet considerable elegance and purity, it has ripe tannins and terrific balance.
