A Media Heiress’s Bid to Sell Sets Off Mayhem Inside Paramount

Wall Street Journal ($)

Selling Paramount would be difficult enough even without all that turmoil, given how it has faded over the past several years. The collapse of the cable TV industry has hammered Paramount, and its struggle to find a profitable path in the new streaming world has only compounded its troubles. The company’s market value has plummeted by 80% on Redstone’s watch over the past eight years—dealing a multibillion-dollar blow to her family’s fortune. Read more

There Are Plenty of Power Publicists. But Only One Works for Taylor Swift.

Wall Street Journal ($)

The average celebrity publicist does not have fans. But Tree Paine, the 52-year-old redhead seen trailing Taylor Swift at awards shows and rubbing shoulders with Gayle King in the Eras Tour VIP area, has become a Swiftverse cult figure in her own right. Fans post reverently about her PR machinations and share videos of her expertly attending to Swift’s needs. Swift has trained her followers to look for meaning in her every gesture, outfit and Instagram caption. Paine’s own work—the stories she chooses to respond to, the narrative she puts forward in the media—has become part of that lore. Read more

Women’s Sports Seizes a Prime Moment to Shine Thanks to Math, Gravity and the Perfect Storm Around March Madness (Column)

Variety

In a perfect storm, the annual bracket-bonkers frenzy around the NCAA college basketball tournament has conferred a level of respect to the women’s game that is rarely seen across sports media, but for the quadrennial exception of the Women’s World Cup. It’s happening this year for all the right reasons – basically, math and gravity. The games have been too good to ignore and the stats put up by such players as the University of Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, Louisiana State University’s Angel Reese, USC’s freshman phenom JuJu Watkins and University of Connecticut’s Paige Bueckers are too eye-popping to not analyze. How Dana Walden Could Defy Critics and Become Disney’s First Female CEO

CNBC

Just a year into her early career at 20th Century Fox, working in publicity, Dana Walden delivered a presentation at a company retreat in Santa Barbara, California. She was determined to leave a lasting impression on Peter Chernin, now chairman and CEO of investment firm The Chernin Group, after several encounters in which he’d never remembered her. To get his attention, Walden decided to be bold. She told Fox executives, including Chernin, that they weren’t being aggressive enough to secure top talent. Fox needed to take bigger swings to generate relationships and land shows that could make it to syndication, Walden argued. That set Walden on a career course correction that’s led her to the doorstep of becoming Iger’s successor. Read more

Geena Davis Explains Why Hollywood Shouldn’t Rest on Its Laurels in the Wake of ‘Barbie’ Success | Exclusive

TheWrap

Oscar-winning actress Geena Davis, founder and head of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, knows things have gotten somewhat better in Hollywood, but there’s a long way still to go. It’s maddening that the trends don’t get picked up when in fact we know audiences prefer movies with more diversity,” Davis told TheWrap in an exclusive interview. “Every time a movie comes out, ‘Well, now, everything will change.’ When ‘Wonder Woman’ came out, everything will change.” Read more

Deloitte's Women @ Work Report Shows Stagnating Progress In and Outside the Workplace for Women

PR Newswire

Now in its fourth year, Deloitte's Women @ Work: A Global Outlook, a survey of 5,000 women in workplaces across 10 countries, explores some of the critical workplace and societal factors impacting women's careers. Rising stress levels and poor mental health persist. And fewer women report feeling supported by their employers to balance work responsibilities with their commitments outside of work—a trend that is leading some women to switch employers. Although women working in a hybrid model are reporting better experiences this year than last, many have recently been asked to return to the office and are reporting adverse effects on their mental health and productivity. Read more | Read the full report

From Zero Diversity To 36% Women In The C-Suite—How Expel Is Doing It

Forbes ($)

Cat Starkey’s recent promotion to CTO brought security operations provider Expel’s female C-suite representation to 36%, a whopping 11% higher than the industry average. For a company that started with “zero diversity” at the C-suite, I was interested in understanding how they made this change and how Cat climbed the ranks to become one of only 8% of CTOs who are women. What I learned gave me hope for the future of women in tech. Read more

How One Nonprofit is Turning to AI to Help Boost Women’s Financial Literacy

Business Insider

Most Americans consider money to be a private topic, and women are among those most reluctant to engage in financial conversations. But not asking the questions they need help with can hold them back financially, experts say. One women-focused nonprofit has launched a new way to help them get faster answers to their queries through the use of an online AI chatbot. The organization, Savvy Ladies, was founded more than 20 years ago by Stacy Francis, a certified financial planner and president and CEO of Francis Financial in New York City. Read more

The Women Who Inspire Us

"Without a doubt the woman who inspires me every day, is my mom, Marilyn Chermak. At 87 years young, my mom is the most selfless person I know to anyone who she meets. She’s the Co-President of her local Florida PAP Cancer Research Organization, runs and coordinates several community groups and events, co-writes a community newsletter, acted and sang in several community plays directed by my dad, and still manages to always put her family and friends at the highest priority. She’s a magnetic leader, eloquent public speaker, and will always be your biggest supporter and champion. She’s also a therapist to all who know her, including the handyman, supermarket cashier and postal worker. Filled with positivity, humor and incredible wisdom, my mom is always ”glass ALL the way filled.”  She is an inspiration to so many, full of encouragement, and empathy. At 87 if I’m half the woman my mom is, I’ll be the luckiest person!"
