“You’re trying to look forward. And at the same time, you’re trying to create stories that feel familiar. So you’re moving into the future, but you’re maintaining a sense of familiarity. I think that’s the hardest balance.”
-Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, on the challenges of running Lucasfilm, when fans of the original Star Wars trilogy measure everything against it and don’t see the business need of broadening the franchise Disney paid so much for.

New York Times ($)
Some of the most memorable movies that I’ve seen lately are from female filmmakers who are also clearly thinking about women’s bodies and helping expand what kinds of women we are seeing onscreen. Companies can take important steps to fix the broken rung by making sure employees are getting equal opportunities for leadership and promotion. But waiting for companies to change is not a strategy. In the meantime, women can take individual action to build their own experience capital. Read more
