From the Bishop
Dear People of the  Diocese of New Jersey,
O Lord our Governor, whose glory is in all the world: We commend this nation to thy merciful care, that, being guided by thy Providence, we may dwell secure in thy peace. Grant to the President of the United States, the Governor of this State, and to all in authority, wisdom and strength to know and to do thy will. Fill them with the love of truth and righteousness, and make them ever mindful of their calling to serve this people in thy fear; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

Today a new era begins in the United States of America. Many are celebrating the beginning of the presidency of Donald Trump and excited about his leadership and direction. Others are waiting and watching. Still others are living in uncertainty and fear. The Diocese of New Jersey, is made up of people who are experiencing all of these feelings. I pray that we will all remember that our identity is in Jesus Christ, as well as our baptismal promises and identity, hold us together. More than anything, Jesus' Summary of the Law is our guiding principle - Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength and love your neighbor as yourself.

With this edition of  Good News for the Garden State, I wish to announce the following staff changes. Effective immediately, I am appointing The Rev. Canon Dr. Brian Jemmott to serve as Canon to Ordinary and Transitions Officer of the Diocese of New Jersey. Canon Jemmott joined us a year ago as Canon Missioner for Black Ministries. From the time he joined us, he has proven himself a excellent member of the staff team. I am confident that he will be an outstanding Canon to the Ordinary and Transitions Officer. I am most grateful to Canon Connie White who has agreed to work with Canon Jemmott so that he will come into the position smoothly. Canon White has been invaluable to us all.

I have also named Canon Phyllis Jones as Chief Operating Officer of the Diocese. This change in title from Chief Financial Officer is really more descriptive of what Phyllis does in her ministry in the diocese. She will continue to have oversight of the finances of the diocese, but her work with me and the vestries and people of the diocese has always taken her beyond mere concern for finances to a wider concern for the mission of the church.

The Budget for 2017 and the Proposed Preliminary Budget for 2018 have been passed by Diocesan Council. They both present real challenges to our common life as a community. Preconvention Hearings will be held beginning toward the end of January. The focus of these hearings will be on the budgets and on our common community life as a diocese. I believe these are critically important conversations and encourage as many of you as possible to participate.

Blessings and peace,

The Right Reverend William H. (Chip) Stokes, D.D.
XII Bishop of New Jersey

Draws over 100 to Trinity Cathedral

About 20 congregations were represented, joined by 23 students and teachers from Trenton High School West.

The day began with a Eucharist with a sermon by the Rev. Dr. Brian Jemmott where $553 were raised for Anchor House - an amount to be matched by the Bishop.
Following the service, members of the Cathedral gave tours to those in the community and participants had the opportunity to work on several volunteer projects.
