Canopy Highlights
Summer Charcuterie Fun!
Over 20 Canopy guests enjoyed our Charcuterie Workshop as part of our HEB Chef Cooking Connections Program. Attendees learned how to create their own charcuterie board with fresh fruits, cheeses, jams and a variety of Boar's Head Meats.

Thank you H-E-B partners, Chef Elisa, and Vincent Discon with Lone Star Provisions, Inc. for leading such a wonderful, informative and delicious event.

Why every newly diagnosed cancer patient should attend Cancer Orientation
We understand that receiving a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, leaving patients and caregivers with many unanswered questions. That's why Canopy offers a one-time support group, specifically designed for newly diagnosed cancer patients and caregivers. Our monthly support group provides a safe and welcoming space to discuss the challenges that come with a cancer diagnosis, while also providing valuable information on how to get the most out of your care.
Wonders & Worries at Canopy

Cancer is hard, complex and impacts the entire family. We strive to provide the best support and resources to cancer survivors, caregivers and loved ones. With the help of our Child Life Specialists with Wonders & Worries, we are able to offer unique, professional and tailored support services to children and teens of parents diagnosed with cancer right here at Canopy.

Don't miss our latest feature in the July 2023 issue of Woodlands City Lifestyle highlighting Wonders & Worries. For more information or to schedule an appointment at Canopy, email [email protected].
JOIN TEAM CANOPY
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
Light the Night
We invite you, your family and friends to join our Canopy team to participate in a beautiful event for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Registration is free for each participant to show your support by joining us for a leisurely walk at Towne Green Park on 11/5/23 at the Annual Light the Night Event. On the evening of the event you will be welcomed with a Yellow, Red, or White colored lantern as you choose to walk as a supporter, cancer survivor or in memory of someone who has lost their battle with cancer.

Canopy depends on our incredible community partners and supporters, and we proudly cheer on the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for the astounding work they do for our community. Participants may raise funds as part of the campaign for incentives, although this is not required. Walkers that raise a minimum of $100 will receive a LSS t-shirt for the walk.

Why join Memorial Hermann to support this cause?

  1. LLS funds research to advance lifesaving treatments which has not only impacted blood cancer patients but also the treatment used for other cancer types.
  2. LLS has funded many of today's most promising advances, including immunotherapy, genomics and precision medicine.
  3. For blood cancer patients, LLS provides free educational resources and programs, free support services, financial assistance and personalized nutrition consultations

Bone Cancer (Sarcoma of Bone) Questions to Ask the Health Care Team

ASCO shares some questions to ask your doctor or other members of the health care team to help you better understand your diagnosis, treatment plan, and overall care. Use the menu to see other pages.

Questions to ask after getting a diagnosis:
What type of bone sarcoma do I have?
Can you explain my pathology report (laboratory test results) to me?
Has this diagnosis been reviewed by a pathologist who is experienced in the diagnosis and classification of sarcoma?
What stage and grade is the bone sarcoma? What does that mean?
Where exactly is the cancer located?
Was my case discussed in a tumor board or other multidisciplinary conference? What does this mean?
What experience does your center have in treating this rare type of sarcoma? Should I be referred to a sarcoma specialty center?

Questions to ask about choosing a treatment and managing side effects:

What are my treatment options?
What clinical trials are available for me? Where are they located, and how do I find out more about them?
What treatment plan do you recommend? Why?
What is the goal of each treatment? Is it to eliminate the cancer, help me feel better, or both?
What are the possible side effects of this treatment, both in the short term and the long term?
What is the expected timeline for my treatment plan?
Who will be part of my health care team, and what does each member do?
Is there someone who provides supportive counseling? If not, can you refer me to a therapist in the community?
Who will be leading my overall treatment?
How will this treatment affect my daily life? Will I be able to work, exercise, and perform my usual activities?
Could this treatment affect my sex life? If so, how and for how long?
Could this treatment affect my ability to become pregnant or have children? If so, should I talk with a fertility specialist before cancer treatment begins?
If I’m worried about managing the costs of cancer care, who can help me?
If I have questions or problems, who should I call?

Questions to ask about having surgery:
What type of surgery will I have? Will lymph nodes be removed?
What is the goal of this surgery?
How long will the operation take?
How long will I be in the hospital?
Can you describe what my recovery from surgery will be like?
Who should I contact about any side effects I experience? And how soon?
If needed, what types of rehabilitation services are available?
What are the possible long-term effects of having this surgery?
What can be done to relieve the side effects?
Will I need additional treatment after surgery?

Questions to ask about having therapies using medication:
What type of treatment is recommended?
What is the goal of this treatment?
How long will it take to give this treatment?
Will I receive this treatment at a hospital or clinic? Or will I take it at home?
What side effects can I expect during treatment?
Who should I contact about any side effects I experience? And how soon?
What are the possible long-term or late effects of having this treatment?
What can be done to prevent or relieve the side effects?

Questions to ask about having radiation therapy:
What type of treatment is recommended?
What is the goal of this treatment?
How long will it take to give this treatment?
What side effects can I expect during treatment?
Who should I contact about any side effects I experience? And how soon?
What are the possible long-term or late effects of having this treatment?
What can be done to prevent or relieve the side effects?

Questions to ask about planning follow-up care:
What is the chance that the cancer will come back? Should I watch for specific signs or symptoms?
What long-term side effects or late effects are possible based on the cancer treatment I received?
What follow-up tests will I need, and how often will those tests be needed?
How do I get a treatment summary and survivorship care plan to keep in my personal records?
Who will be leading my follow-up care?
What survivorship support services are available to me? To my family?

Healthy Healing Meals

Canopy is proud to offer free "Healthy Healing Meals" to cancer patients undergoing cancer treatment. These meals are inspired by the Eating Well Through Cancer Cookbook and tips by Holly Clegg with Lee Jackson, RDN, LDN.

Designed to support patients during the toughest days of their treatment, these freezer meals are available for pickup and can be consumed on the day of or day after treatment when energy levels are at their lowest and side effects may be the most prevalent. We are excited to offer this service to our community and encourage any cancer patient in need to contact Canopy for more information or to pick up 1-2 meals.

Prepared with care by Kate Senior.

Canopy Spotlight
Janice Swan
Front Desk Volunteer
Front desk volunteer, Janice Swan, originally from Glasgow, Scotland, joined the Canopy team in 2019. She is a trained wig fitter and serves on the Logistics committee. Prior to coming to the United States, Janice had a variety of working positions in the UK. She was in international banking, was a manager in the medical field and worked for a relocation company assisting families who had been transferred to the area. Since her husband’s job required moving every few years, the family had the opportunity to experience many European cultures, with the sights, sounds, and foods of Paris being the favorite. In 2002, Janice and her husband, Duncan, and two children moved to the United States. Their daughter is a realtor in the Houston area and their son is in medical sales. Janice’s volunteering reaches beyond our Canopy doors. She has served on the In the Pink of Health Committee for 5 years and is looking forward to the luncheon on September 15th with the guest speaker, Elin Hilderbrand, bestselling author. For the past three summers, Janice has also volunteered her time and talents at a five-day outdoor camp with Love Fosters Hope, dedicated to serving children in foster care

More about Janice:

Favorite Color: All the colors of the rainbow
Favorite food: British chocolate…I have a sweet tooth.
Favorite place to visit: Europe, especially Paris.
Pastime: I enjoy traveling with my husband and spending time with my family both in the U.S. and those living in Europe. Daily exercise is an important part of my day whether I’m taking a walk or working out with my trainer. I enjoy reading and a nice glass of wine at the end of a busy day.

Why do you volunteer at Canopy? Volunteering is an opportunity to give back. I lost my mother and grandmother to cancer. My husband is a cancer survivor.

What does Canopy mean to you? It is all the smiles and gratitude we receive. When I fit someone with a wig, I can see an immediate change in their eyes and smile.…both are much brighter than when they first came through the door.

What makes Canopy unique? All of our services are free. The Canopy offers a wonderful welcome to everyone no matter where they are in their cancer journey.

Spotlight by: Patricia Gamble

Thank you, Janice for the time and talent that you bring to Canopy and In the Pink of Health. You are a true servant leader and we are lucky to have you on the Canopy team.
