  Nichols and Porter  A-TEAAM

Nichols and Porter Middle School students say the guidance and support they are receiving from the Ambassadors of the Evers Academy of African-American Males or A-TEAAM is priceless. The A-TEAAM is a mentorship program which inspires young Black males in middle school to honor the life and live the legacy of Medgar Evers as they interact with a "village" of role models and mentors. This 'village' of mentors provides support and one-on-one guidance, utilizing a meaningful curriculum to empower these young men as they matriculate through middle school. The purpose of the A-TEAAM Movement is to improve the quality of life for young African-American males by equipping them with the necessary skills, knowledge and support provided by the guidance of a caring mentor. One objective is to assist them in making internal changes with an outcome of increased positive self-esteem and overall improvement in the way they view the world.

The A-TEAAM program's goal from 2013-2016 is to identify 200 African American males in across Mississippi to start a movement that empowers them to be confident and overcome inevitable obstacles they will encounter. Each year 40-60 males of color will be selected to participate in this project that will consist of a minimum of twelve 1-hr sessions from September to April each year. Additional sessions include an Organization Presidents' Training, a mentor training session, orientation sessions for the Ambassadors and for their parents and teachers.

This program will improve the quality of life for young African American males in several middle schools, including Nichols Middle School and Porter Middle School in Canton and Blackburn, Hardy and Powell in Jackson. The participants are provided a "village of mentors" with a purposeful curriculum. Parental involvement and teacher involvement are critical and necessary components of this project. Each organization has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with The Foundation agreeing to provide a 'village' of 4-6 mentors for two of the young males participating in the program.

The ambassadors received gift cards for successfully attending and participating in mentoring sessions.

A Show of Support over a Thanksgiving Meal

CPSD parents and grandparents showed their support by visiting their child's school and enjoying a Thanksgiving meal together. Students say they love it when their parents take time out of their busy schedules to come to their schools to visit with their teachers and see what they are working on in their classrooms. Nichols Middle School displayed students' work on the walls in the hallway so parents could view their assignments after their meal.

McNeal Elementary students dressed as Indians, pilgrims and other early settlers to welcome their parents. Parents say they enjoy the opportunity to encourage their children to learn all they can while they are at school.
