This Year's Theme: "It's Time"

Hello Canton PSD Community,
It is my honor to serve you as superintendent of schools. Over the past year we have gained momentum in our work transforming the attitudes in our community and raising everyone's expectations so that all of our children can achieve.
Our shared vision is that all of our children in Canton Public Schools gain an education pre-kindergarten through 12th grade that will provide them with a diploma that serves as a passport to future success and that our district will lead the state in academic growth. We've already proven that "Canton Can." Now "It's Time" for the Canton community, parents, students, and local businesses to consistently value our educational system by placing our children first.

                                           Inspiring Action

"It's Time" to take the "Tigers to the Top." That's the message given at Convocation to Canton Public School faculty and staff. They were inspired and motivated to roll up their sleeves and take their jobs seriously as they prepared for a new school year.

During his heart wrenching speech, motivational speaker Dr. Joe Martin told educators to always remember that every child matters and everyone from the janitor to the Superintendent has a role to play in saving children's lives. Dr. Martin said  in spite of being extremely poor, molested as a child, and reared by an alcoholic, single mom in one of the toughest inner-city ghettos in Miami, Florida, he overcame obstacles and went on to become successful. He obtained a doctorate degree in curriculum development and a master's degree in communication. He started his first business at the age of 22 and has written several books.

However, Martin said many of his teachers missed seeing his potential and never encouraged him to go to college. He said the violence in his neighborhood was so bad, if anyone asked him what he wanted to become when he grew up the answer would be -- alive. However, he said one teacher saved his life by inspiring him to come to school every day. His persistence and drive would later pay off. Despite being turned down by 30 colleges, he never gave up. Once he was finally accepted, he said it was the school's janitor who always encouraged him to finish.

He told faculty and staff the impact they have on children's lives is too important to take lightly. He said it's more than a job, it's a calling. He told those who aren't up for the task, to seek other professions instead of destroying children's untapped potential.

Superintendent Ike Haynes also told CPSD faculty and staff  that continuous improvement in teaching, leadership, attitudes, and expectations is the key to the district's success. He said "Can Canton" because every member of our community shares responsibility for successful schools.

                                    Welcome Back "It's Time"

Canton Public School District welcomed over 3500 students back to an exciting school year. This year's theme is "It's Time!" Superintendent Ike Haynes says it's time to show that CPSD can lead the state in academic growth.  Haynes says "Canton Can" integrate technology in its classrooms as it rolls out its 1:1 Digital Learning Initiative. As a result of the successful passage of a 33.5M bond referendum, students in grades 9-12 and all administrators and teachers were issued MacBook Air laptops. The bond also provides state-of-the-art technology upgrades including Promethean Boards, classroom sets of iPads for grades K-8 and the use of technology in instruction at all schools. Students say the new MacBooks are already keeping them more engaged in learning.

Building improvements are also included in the bond issue. Demolition crews are expected to began tearing down the old  McNeal Elementary School in December as plans get underway for the construction of a new K-5 school at McNeal and Canton Elementary and a new CHS 9th Grade Academy.

The district also began its first  Pre-K Program with a total of 55 students enrolled in three classes. This year's instructional focus is "Literacy." Superintendent Haynes extended the school day to give students more instructional time. Interventionist will work closely with students everyday to ensure they get individualized help right way. All nine schools instituted "Tiger Time" where students drop everything and read everyday.

TIGERS TO THE TOP SNACK  PROGRAM

With the new Extended School Day schedule some parents were concerned whether their children would get a snack.  Worry no more. The answer is yes.  Thanks to the Office of Child Nutrition's "Tigers to the Top Snack Program."

It  is designed to accommodate the nutritional needs of the extended day. It is offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday in addition to the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable program that is offered Tuesday and Thursday. "These snacks will make sure Canton Public School students are energized and ready to tackle the extended
day," said Child Nutrition Director Bettye Liddell.

Students will be offered a variety of snacks including everything from fresh fruits to Goldfish crackers and more. They will also be offered juice. For more details, check out the menus posted on our website.

Canton High held its "Meet the Tigers" night to kick off an exciting year of sports and extracurricular events. Everyone got a chance to meet this year's football team, volleyball team, cheerleaders, flag girls,  "Prancing Tigerettes," and  the "Baby Boom of the South" band. School leaders say a strong focus on academics, coupled with opportunities to develop leadership and character skills through extracurricular activities, equals a winning combination for a successful school year.

School Attendance

Mississippi law requires students to be in attendance 63 percent of the school day in order to be counted as present. This means, if students are not at school for 63 percent of the school day, they will be counted as absent and they will not be counted toward the District's Average Daily Attendance. Therefore, CPSD is asking parents to defer early dismissals of students for appointments and other activities.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE, TARDINESS, AND EXCUSES

Regular school attendance and promptness are extremely important matters to the Canton Public School District. Time on task is essential if students are to succeed in their educational efforts. The right to attend the public school requires responsibility of both parents and students for school attendance each day. Tardiness, absences, dismissals, and suspensions are all problems that require action by school officials because each of these results in a loss of instructional time.

The Canton Public School District welcomes its 2015-2016 Administrative team.

"Canton Can Integrate Technology"

Canton High Football players join Nissan and Habitat volunteers to help Canton Families in need

Coach Daryl Jones and Canton High Football players lent a helping hand to Nissan and Habitat volunteers to help build homes for needy families in the Canton community.
Nissan volunteers added hard hats and tool belts to their work attire as they continued a partnership with Habitat for Humanity Mississippi Capital Area (HFHMCA) that began nearly a decade ago.

Hundreds of employee volunteers from Nissan took part in a seven-day build of two homes built simultaneously at 628 Coleman Street and 630 Coleman Street in Canton for homeowners Adrienne Manning and Mylinda Phillips. Volunteers from the community also joined the Nissan team each build day.

"This event was an excellent opportunity for my players to give back to their community, said  Coach Jones, CSPD Athletic Director. CPSD students are always looking for ways to improve the quality of life for people in their neighborhoods by providing community service." Students say they enjoyed helping Nissan and Habitat make a difference in the lives of two Canton families.

"We share Habitat's commitment to building sustainable communities," said Steve Marsh, Nissan - Canton, vice president of manufacturing. "Building these houses makes a positive, lasting contribution in our local community, and we are honored to have this opportunity to work with the Manning and Phillips families on their new homes."
Since 2006, Nissan employees have helped to build more than 60 homes across the United States, logging more than 70,000 volunteer hours.
"Nissan is a leader not only in the automotive industry but also in community citizenship," said Cindy Griffin, executive director of HFHMCA. "
