Superintendent Cassandra Williams
Canton Public School District Establishes Council for College and Career Readiness

Each year, the Mississippi Department of Education assigns grade classifications to school districts and individual schools within districts. This grading system, known as Mississippi's Accountability Model, is designed to provide information about how well schools and districts are educating students. The A-F grading system includes several components, including how well students perform on state tests, whether students are showing improvement on state tests from year to year, and whether students are graduating within four years. Additionally, high schools have an added Acceleration component that measures the number of students who take and pass accelerated courses such as Advanced Placement and the number of eligible students who take and pass credit-bearing college courses. In short, the more students that a high school has who take and pass advanced courses, the more points the school will receive in the Acceleration component of the Accountability Model.
In addition to increasing Canton High School's accountability rating, the benefits of taking advanced and college credit-bearing courses are significant for students. Students who take and are successful in these courses are more prepared for college because they will be pre-exposed to college-level rigor. These students often save on college expenses by taking introductory level courses while still in high school. Students with this type of high school preparation often graduate from college early or they are able to take even more rigorous course work in college. The focus on college and career readiness in high school is a big-picture approach to providing our community, state, and nation with a workforce that is fully prepared for success.
To address this need, Canton Public School District will establish the Canton Council for College and Career Readiness (4CR) to seek and provide funding for eligible students at Canton High School to take college credit-bearing courses and be dually enrolled at Holmes Community College.
Though the fee for college credit-bearing courses is significantly cheaper for students who take the course in high school (as opposed to once they are fully enrolled in college), the $100 per class fee is still significant for many students. Additionally, some students are eligible to take several courses, which will allow them to enter college with several college credits. We have identified that a primary reason for students' non-participation in the past was their inability to pay for the courses.
The primary goal of the Canton Council for College and Career Readiness (4CR) will be to secure and provide funding for eligible students to take college credit-bearing courses. Our goal is to provide funding for 150 students to take at least one course.
We need the help of our community organizations and businesses to support our efforts to ensure that our students are college and career ready. Please contact me at cassandrawilliams@cantonschools.net for more information on supporting us in meeting our goal.

                                                            Nissan/BankPlus Mini Grant Winners

Thanks Nissan and BankPlus for awarding the Canton Public School District  $41,577 in mini-grants! Thanks teachers for writing great grants to improve academic performance.
Canton Career Center had the highest scoring grant this year. Hats off to Mrs. Sheila Sumrall for writing the project entitled "Picnic Anywhere." The students in the construction class will build children's picnic tables to sell at the flea market to pay for their SkillsUSA leadership competition. The students will build the tables before the fall flea market in October. The students will study the blueprint, estimate the costs, cut the boards, nail and screw the boards together. The students' knowledge is expanded through practical use. The project gives the students an advantage by allowing them to learn how to build simple projects.

School Attendance

Mississippi law requires students to be in attendance 63 percent of the school day in order to be counted as present. This means, if students are not at school for 63 percent of the school day, they will be counted as absent and they will not be counted toward the District's Average Daily Attendance. Therefore, CPSD is asking parents to defer early dismissals of students for appointments and other activities.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE, TARDINESS, AND EXCUSES

Regular school attendance and promptness are extremely important matters to the Canton Public School District. Time on task is essential if students are to succeed in their educational efforts. The right to attend the public school requires responsibility of both parents and students for school attendance each day. Tardiness, absences, dismissals, and suspensions are all problems that require action by school officials because each of these results in a loss of instructional time.

Congratulations Huey Porter Middle School Spelling Bee Winners!
