"Nurturing our Community: One Student at a Time" |
Superintendent Cassandra Williams
I am delighted to begin the 2016-2017 school year! With the new school year comes an enormous level of excitement. We are beginning a new year with a fresh start and a brand new horizon to anticipate. We know that we have a tremendous amount of work to do and only a little time in which to do it. We will focus specifically on how we are teaching. It will not be enough to simply say, "I've taught it". We will dig deeper with our instruction. We will ensure that we reach all students, whether they are performing on grade level, below grade level, or above grade level. That's what teaching really means.
Our greatest resources are our communities. We have a responsibility to the city of Canton as employees of Canton Public School District. Our responsibility is to shape the lives of young boys and girls so that they will graduate fully ready to compete with other students in college and other adults in the workforce. What we do with the boys and girls of Canton impacts the state, the nation, and the world. Simply put, teaching can't be just a job. Teaching is a calling. Our purpose will be based on the concept that what we do with the children that we see every day will help shape the city, the state, the nation, and the world. We must ask ourselves these questions at the end of every day: "Am I proud of how I shaped the world today?" and, "Do I want to live in a world that is led by the children that I've taught ?" We want the best for our students, and wanting the best for them means that we must have high expectations. We know where our struggles are because we've seen our data. But we see our struggles as a challenge. It will be our mission to do what some people say we cannot. We know that we will do it.
Our district's new motto is "Nurturing our Community: One Student at a Time." The city depends on us. The state depends on us. The nation depends on us. The world depends on us. Our children depend on us.

Meet the Tigers
Canton High held its

School leaders say a strong focus on academics, coupled with opportunities to develop leadership and character skills through extracurricular activities, equals a winning combination for a successful school year.

School Attendance
Mississippi law requires students to be in attendance 63 percent of the school day in order to be counted as present. This means, if students are not at school for 63 percent of the school day, they will be counted as absent and they will not be counted toward the District's Average Daily Attendance. Therefore, CPSD is asking parents to defer early dismissals of students for appointments and other activities.
SCHOOL ATTENDANCE, TARDINESS, AND EXCUSES
Regular school attendance and promptness are extremely important matters to the Canton Public School District. Time on task is essential if students are to succeed in their educational efforts. The right to attend the public school requires responsibility of both parents and students for school attendance each day. Tardiness, absences, dismissals, and suspensions are all problems that require action by school officials because each of these results in a loss of instructional time.
|
CPSD parents get important updates during Title I Parent Meetings
CPSD parents learned how they can get involved and what it means for their schools to be Title I schools. During
Title I Parent Meetings, school leaders told parents being designated Title I schools means their schools receive federal funds to supplement their existing programs. Those dollars are used for identifying students experiencing difficulties and providing timely assistance to help these students meet the State's challenging content standards. The funds also allow schools to purchase supplemental staff, programs, materials and supplies. It requires schools to recruit, hire, and retain highly qualified teachers. Schools must also conduct parental involvement meetings, training and activities. School leaders must inform parents of their rights to be involved in decisions on how funds are spent to help increase students' academic performance.
