Canton Public School District's Statement on State Accountability Labels

The Mississippi Department of Education recently released school and district level performance classifications. These classifications were determined by our percentages of students who performed at the minimum, basic, passing, proficient, and advanced levels on the state administered assessment during the 2015-2016 school year. Additionally, our performance levels reflect the degree to which our students' performance improved from the 2014-2015 school year to the 2015-2016 year. At the high school level, the performance classification also includes the graduation rate for the 2015-2016 school year.
Our performance classifications are as follows:
McNeal Elementary School                                         B
Reuben B. Myers School of Arts and Sciences           C
Goodloe Elementary School                                        C
Canton Elementary School                                          D
Nichols Middle School                                                F
Porter Middle School                                                   F
Canton High School                                                     F
Canton Public School District                                   F

While we are disappointed in our performance classifications, we anticipated that our classifications would be low. During the 2015-2016 school year, some of our schools did not have the focus on progress monitoring that is necessary to ensure that students grow. Because we anticipated this, we made several key changes before the current school year began. We have hired new personnel in key places, we are implementing targeted interventions to address struggling students' needs early, teachers are participating in intensive professional development, and school and district administration are being held accountable for growing students. In addition to focusing our attention on struggling students, we are also targeting our proficient and advanced students to ensure that they continue to grow. We will begin identifying fourth and fifth grade proficient and advanced students and expose them to rigorous content. By identifying students early, we will create cohorts of students who will be prepared for advanced coursework in high school. Another layer that we will add is our 9th Grade Academy that will open next school year. Our academy will focus on students' desired career pathways and will include professional seminars, job shadowing, and dropout prevention support. We are placing our focus back where it needs to be: on teaching and learning. We truly believe that our effort and sense of urgency will result in higher performance classifications this time next school year.
