Meet the Tigers New Boys Basketball Coach

CPSD welcomes home one of its own to turn the Canton High Boys Basketball Team into a consistently winning program . Russell Evans says great teams come and go but his goal is to make CHS' Boys Basketball program one of the best in the state.

Evans, a Canton native and CPSD Alumnus, who has spent the last eight seasons as the head coach at Pearl, says he couldn't pass up the opportunity to bring his

talents back home.

Evans replaces Coach Chris Love . The district thanks Love for his service.

Ready for an Adventure

Canton High Track and Field standout Devie Freeman II,  says he's ready for the next chapter in life as he signs with  Kansas State University. Freeman gets a full scholarship to compete at the highest level in the division one college. The new Wildcat says he will get a chance to compete with some of the best athletes in the nation by attending KSU, one of the Big 12 universities.

The honor student says he wants to major in Kinesiology so he can become an athletic trainer and one day coach on the professional level. Why go so far away from home? Freeman says he's ready for an adventure. He encourages others who may question if they can achieve their dreams."Don't give up. If you have a dream go for it," says Freeman. He says he is not giving up on his dream to one day compete in the Olympics. Freeman, who also plays football and is on the student council,  says his charisma, attitude and character will be assets to the Wildcats' team.

His mother Atlene says although she will be sad to see him go so far away from home, she is proud and excited for this great opportunity."He loves this sport. It's been a long road, but with God by his side, Devie's hard work has truly paid off. I will travel and continue to support him." His dad, Devie Sr., says he has always encouraged him to "Think big, don't sweat the small stuff, and do your own thing. I am so proud of him, but maybe now we will have some food left in the refrigerator," he chuckled.

Devie says his mother, father and CHS Coach O'Keefe Henderson has motivated him and kept him on track over the years. " I'm proud of him. he has put in a lot of hard work. He has three individual State Championships. In 2012, he became a State Champion in the 200 meter Dash, and the 400 meter Dash. In 2013, he became a State Champion in the 400 meter Dash. In 2013, he helped Canton High bring home the first Team Track and Field State Championship. Freeman is the first Canton athlete to compete in all 3 sprint events in the State Championship. When he started out, all he could talk about was Olympic star Michael Johnson, now he's on track to follow in his footsteps."
