Note from the Director

February may just be the most overlooked month of the year at Little River Canyon. It's like an outdoor baseline soon to be filled with new wildflowers, budding trees, migrating birds, and the reemergence of wildlife. During this time, visitation to the National Park and the Canyon Center tends to slow, making it the perfect season for solitude and exclusivity. In other words, this is the ideal time to visit before the crowds return. If you enjoy group activities, check out our guided events below. Either way, don’t miss this special time of year at Little River Canyon.

For those who prefer indoor experiences, February offers something special as well. One of my favorite annual traditions is our evening of food and music with TAD of Jazz. This year, the event will take place on Friday, February 21st—read on for more details about our most exquisite event of the year.

As always, we are preparing to bring back beloved traditions while also introducing new events and activities designed to capture your interest.

Thank you for supporting the Little River Canyon Center and our trusted partners at the National Park Service Little River Canyon National Preserve. We have been working together since 1992, and the results speak for themselves. But if you don’t come out to visit, you might just miss something fantastic! Keep reading for more information.

Although the recent warm weather felt like spring, nature is slowly beginning to awaken. Look closely, and you’ll notice buds beginning to swell on trees, hinting at the growth to come. Birds that migrated south for the winter are starting the journey back, filling the air with their songs. At the Canyon Center, we’re already hearing Spring Peepers (Pseudacris crucifer) and Chorus Frogs (Pseudacris spp.) calling in the afternoons—a sure sign that the season is shifting. These tiny amphibians are beginning their breeding calls, creating a chorus that signals the start of new life, even if the cold temperatures might be just around the corner.

One of the best ways to observe seasonal transition is by participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count (Feb. 14–17). This annual community science event invites people of all ages to observe and record the birds they see, helping scientists track migration patterns and population trends. Whether you’re in your backyard or exploring a nearby trail, take a moment to listen and watch—nature is waking up, and you don’t want to miss it!

Spend time in your favorite places watching birds— use the free smart phone app, eBird or Merlin to document them! To participate, spend as little as 15 minutes noticing the birds around you February 14 – 17. Join us at the Little River Canyon Center Saturday, February 14th for a Bird Watching Hike at 9:30 to help us document the birds in this outstanding citizen science project.
