As we enter the holiday season, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the incredible journey of Little River Canyon National Preserve. Nearly 30 years ago, this vision of transforming a natural treasure into a National Park Service unit seemed out of reach. But thanks to the tireless efforts of Jacksonville State University, Alabama Power, local leaders, and dedicated community members, that dream became a reality.
Since its official designation in 1995, Little River Canyon has grown to be more than just a breathtaking landscape. It has become a hub for tourism, education, and conservation, generating nearly $500 million in economic output since 2012 alone. The Little River Canyon Center, built in 2007, has only deepened this legacy, serving as a place where nature and community connect.
As we look ahead to the 30th anniversary in 2025, we are reminded of the power of teamwork, vision, and perseverance. This season, let’s give thanks for the people and partnerships that have shaped this remarkable journey—and for the beauty and prosperity it continues to bring to our region.
May your holidays be filled with joy, gratitude, and moments to appreciate the wonders of nature and community. Here’s to celebrating past successes and embracing the promise of an even brighter future.
Warm holiday wishes,
Pete Conroy,
Director
