Employee Spotlight

Ellen Bush Duncan is a Bereavement Coordinator for the Canyon Hospice Salt Lake Team; and also a non-denominational Chaplain. She strives to give authenticity, compassion, and sincere dedication to serving those navigating the tender pathways of grief.

Joining Canyon in September 2019, she brought with her many profound experiences & learned perspectives; and carries a deep commitment to honor & support those who journey with grief alongside.

Ellen views it a distinct privilege each day, to be able to give acknowledgement & reverence to the precious intangibles of life: feelings, emotions, & the unique souls we each possess.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Ellen finds joy & fulfillment in music, sports, shopping for good deals, remodeling & décor; and most importantly, creating lasting memories with her grandchildren.

On Ellen’s Bucket-List to accomplish, is the printing of a children’s book she wrote--with her grandchildren as the characters within the story; and also, a personal compilation about some of the tender mercies & blessings she has witnessed through the years.

Some of her musical endeavors include being a member of several mixed & specialty choirs, madrigals, instrumentals; and even once singing a solo on live radio, with accompanying music via headphones.

An avid sports fan, Ellen was on the girl’s High School Basketball Team; and, has always had an intense passion for all things Football---be it College, NFL, and even XFL & USFL.

As for her love of shopping, many years ago she won a 3-minute shopping spree at a local grocery store Grand-Opening; and was able to gather $474 worth of groceries into a very full cart.

Ellen feels it a humbling opportunity and blessing to be a member of such an amazing Hospice Team; and cherishes being a part of the Canyon Family.

Benefits of Physical Activity

Regular physical activity is crucial for optimal health, offering a myriad of benefits such as improved brain health, weight management, disease prevention, and enhanced everyday functionality.

For adults, incorporating moderate-to-vigorous physical activity into daily routines yields significant health advantages, rivaling other lifestyle choices in impact. Regardless of age, abilities, ethnicity, or body shape, everyone can reap the rewards of physical activity.

Immediate benefits include enhanced cognitive function for children and reduced anxiety for adults post-exercise. Sustained physical activity promotes mental acuity, diminishes depression and anxiety, and enhances sleep quality.

Weight management hinges on a balance between calorie intake and expenditure. Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight requires around 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week, such as dancing or gardening.

Reducing health risks is another outcome of regular physical activity. It lowers the risk of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, infectious diseases, and certain cancers.

Strengthening bones and muscles through activities like weightlifting supports mobility and daily functionality, reducing the risk of falls and fractures, particularly in older adults.

Increasing daily physical activity levels correlates with improved longevity and decreased mortality rates. Small increments in activity, like adding 10 minutes of exercise daily, can make a significant impact on overall health.

For individuals with chronic conditions or disabilities, regular physical activity can alleviate symptoms, enhance mood, and improve overall quality of life.

In essence, prioritizing physical activity is a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle, offering a multitude of benefits across age groups and abilities.
