Three Explanations for a Good Safety Year

And only one survives a change in leadership

When an organization reports its best safety year on record, there are three possible explanations, it may have:

  1. Built genuine capacity to prevent serious harm.
  2. Applied enough executive attention to suppress the variance that would otherwise have surfaced.
  3. Achieve a period without an event due to luck.

On a quarterly report, the three are indistinguishable.

This session examines what executive teams and boards cannot establish from the safety information they receive, and why the documents that govern enterprise exposure are usually the ones nobody examines. It is built for people who already have good safety performance and are not certain what those numbers prove.

A DISCUSSION, NOT A PRESENTATION

Sixty minutes: roughly forty minutes of prepared discussion, then twenty minutes of live questions. The prepared portion will be recorded and made freely available afterward. The question and answer portion will not be recorded, so participants can speak candidly. Bring the situation you are actually in and let's discuss.

DATE THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2026

TIME 10AM Central • 4PM UK

LENGTH 60 minutes

COST Complimentary

Attendance is limited to keep the conversation manageable.

What You Will Leave With:

  • Three routes to a low injury count, and why only one of them carries on when the people currently holding it are away.
  • Why a report composed of outcomes and activity volume cannot signal declining capability until the decline produces a tragedy.
  • What a regulator, plaintiff counsel, or an acquirer reads when they examine your governance record, and what that record reveals about capacity.
  • The difference between a board that reviews safety and a board that governs it, and how to tell which one you have from past meeting minutes.
  • Three things no governance record can establish, regardless of its quality.

Participants will also receive How Boards are Blind, a seven question governance self-assessment, following the session.

Who This is For:

The people accountable for safety performance who do not directly produce it: board members and directors on audit, risk, HSE or sustainability committees; chief executives and C-level leaders; presidents, division and regional leaders, and vice presidents of operations; general counsel and heads of risk or internal audit; and senior HSE executives who prepare board and executive materials.

No technical safety background is required. The discussion assume governance fluency rather than operational safety expertise.
