Organizations that face negativity from their leadership, employees, partners and prospects are not unlike people who face negativity from the people around them. Repeated exposure to negative influence can tend to leave organizations and people vulnerable. The dictionary defines vulnerability as "capable of being physically or emotionally wounded."  When you or your organization is vulnerable or "open to attack" as the dictionary puts it, fear erects a wall of rigidity that can lead to being stuck. People become disengaged, afraid to take risk, untrusting, perfectionists, and judgmental. At this point organizational cultures implode and people's hope for fulfillment and purpose becomes illusive.

Notice when stuck-like behaviors show up in your life. What triggers you to be defensive, afraid, avoid risk and judge? How do you behave when they show up? What has shutting down cost you? What risk will you take so that you don't end up losing more by shut down?

Lean into your vulnerabilities and fears before autopilot takes over and puts you in shut down mode. When people and organizations run on autopilot, innovations halts, sensitivity disappears and relationships are frayed. Just because you remain open does not mean that you will categorically be defeated by a full weapons assault. It means that while an attack may occur, you have purposefully chosen not to raise a wall that will block off opportunity and solutions. You'll notice the artillery firing your way but that doesn't mean it is missile guided to destroy your heart. It's just there.

Lean in at the very point that you want to lean out. Notice the fear. Name it. Be grateful that you can observe it without becoming it. Be curious. Be compassionate. Don't freeze. When your heart or the heart of your organization is exposed it's still beating and generating energy that creates life.
