National Identity Theft Prevention and Awareness Month Tips
Continuing with our series of tips to recognize National Identity Theft Prevention and Awareness Month, we look at "phishing" emails, one of the tactics cybercriminals use in an effort to capture your money and/or personal information. "Phishing" emails appear to come from a reputable company, enticing the victim into divulging such personal information as usernames, passwords, financial account information and social security numbers.

During the holiday season, we are pressed for time, inundated with offers as well as emails with legitimate information regarding recent purchases. This can be overwhelming and can result in making us especially vulnerable to missing fraud attacks. Follow the tips and rules of thumb below to protect yourself against phishing scams.

Purchase Scams:  Do not click on links that are emailed to you.  Instead, go to the site directly. Check website addresses (URLs) for the lock symbol and ensure that they start with "https" (the "s" means "secure"). Cybercriminals aim to blend in with your real holiday shopping emails and trick you into an absent-minded click into a malicious site.

Fake Shipping Notifications, Receipts and Invoices. Do not open attachments  that appear to be notifications, invoices or receipts from retailers.  C ybercriminals hide malware that can be activated by opening an attachment.  Instead, refer to the order and tracking confirmations you received at the time of purchase.

Fake Customer Surveys: Never give out personal information.  Online surveys offering cash or gift cards as a reward for completing them often end up being a scam. If a survey asks for personal or financial information, it is likely a phishing scam.

Cape Cod 5 Rules of Thumb:
1. Slow down.  Don't trust anyone rushing you into immediate action.
2. Be wary of emails with unsolicited offers or that come from a generic addressee.
3. Never wire money to someone you don't know or send payment requested in the form of
    a gift card.
4. Type website addresses yourself rather than clicking a link from an email.
5. Misspellings and bad grammar are an indicator of fraudulent websites.
