Quarterly Regional Meetings Continue on Martha's Vineyard
|
The Martha's Vineyard Quarterly Regional Meeting ("QRM") was held on Thursday, November 21, at the Martha's Vineyard Museum. During the presentation on Financial Know-How, Stephanie Dennehy, Chief Marketing Officer, highlighted a number of Cape Cod 5 tools, products and services that correspond with common customer financial journeys. Members of the Relationship Team, Executive and Senior Leadership teams underscored the importance of Financial Know-How and explored ways that the Bank can make an even greater impact in this area. Tim Brown, Mortgage Loan Officer, mentioned that there still seems to exist for many customers and employees a stigma around asking for financial advice. The group reiterated the importance of remaining accessible and approachable for our customers and colleagues so they feel comfortable asking for advice.
Rich DeWitt, Senior Financial Advisor, raised the importance of meeting our customers where they are in their financial journeys with tailored offerings of products, tools and advice. Dorothy Savarese, Chair and CEO, reiterated the importance of the Relationship Team model for pinpointing these unique customer needs.
The discussions at QRMs continue to generate great ideas for more ways to expand our Financial Know-How efforts through each of our Five Ways of Engagement. The QRM's will continue with the Southeastern Mass meeting on Friday, December 6 at the Mirbeau Inn in Plymouth. If you would like to RSVP please email executiveoffice@capecodfive.com.

Fraud and Security Scams Affecting Caregivers
|
November is National Family Caregivers Month, designated to honor and acknowledge the important role family caregivers play. We know that many of you are caring for loved ones, and this is what influenced the introduction of our new
Cape Cod 5 Child and Elder Care Benefit Program
. In addition to the challenges of time and financial management, we know that family caregivers must often help their loved ones mitigate the threat of cyber scams. For a number of reasons, fraudsters often target the elderly with scams. Below, you will find a number of scams that are often targeted at seniors, along with tips that you and your loved ones can use to better identify and protect against scams.
- Giveaway Scams - These include letters, emails or calls that excitedly announce that you are a winner of a giveaway or prize that you never registered for. These often require an immediate response or an upfront payment and may even come with a check that is for more than stated with a request for you to return the difference.
- Tip: Never "pay to play" and always verify the requester before you write or issue a check. If it's too good to be true, it probably is! You can't win a lottery or giveaway if you have never registered or purchased a ticket to play.
- Charity Scams - These often include urgent, emotional pleas for an immediate donation.
- Tip: If contacted by someone urging you to make an immediate donation to an organization, hang up and call the charity directly to donate.
- Investment Scams: These come in the form of investment tips or deals that seem too good to pass up. They often include no fees or commissions, indicate an above-average return or require an immediate purchase.
- Tip: If something is described as "risk-free," it may be a scam.
- Contractor Scams - These include solicitations for a job pointing out an "urgent" problem with your property. Oftentimes, up-front cash payments are requested. Sometimes, the "contractor" will begin the job but claim that the problem is more serious than initially estimated, demand more money or disappear with the work unfinished.
- Tip: Be sure to check references for home projects before paying deposits.
- Tax Scams - These come in the form of an official-seeming email that claims you are seriously delinquent on your taxes and that you can avoid prosecution if you pay what's due within 24 hours via a wire transfer or banker's check.
- Tip: The IRS will never arbitrarily email you regarding your taxes and they never specify accepted payment methods. Also, the correct IRS email address is IRS.GOV. Emails from IRS.COM or IRS.ORG are spam.
- Imposter Scams - These include urgent calls from a scammer posing as a family member or dear friend who seems to be in trouble and requires money to solve the problem
- Tip: Always follow up with loved ones directly to ensure that you have been speaking with the correct person
- Tech Support Scams - These come in the form of a pop-up on the computer claiming that the device has a virus that needs immediate attention. They can also come in as a phone call appearing to be from Microsoft or another vendor saying you are owed a refund and the company you purchased support with is out of business.
- Tip: Always contact a reliable tech support source and be sure to check references for companies you engage with. Never click on anything in a pop-up window and be sure to contact TIS for help with your work devices.
- Online Sales Scams - Someone posts something for sale online and receives a check for more than the asking price. They are then asked to return the extra money.
- Tip: Beware of checks that are for more than expected.

Small Business Saturday
|
Saturday, November 30th marks the 10th anniversary of Small Business Saturday, a day dedicated to encouraging shoppers to patronize local businesses and retailers.
Shopping and dining locally and supporting small businesses benefits the local community by strengthening relationships and the economy.
Here are five reasons to shop and dine locally this Small Business Saturday:
- Re-invest back into the community.
- Skip the long lines and frustration that typically occur while shopping on Black Friday.
- Limit the environmental impacts of shipping.
- Support local jobs.
- Find one-of-a-kind gifts that may not be found in big box stores or through online retailers.
Participating in Small Business Saturday is a great way to support the independent merchants who are the foundation for our local economy.
