CCA Students Participated in
Cape & Islands Youth Climate Action Summit
|
|
Six CCA students were a part of the Cape & Islands Youth Climate Action Summit held this past Wednesday in Sandwich. This event is sponsored by Mass Audubon and an excellent opportunity for students to gather with peers to learn from experts about the possible impacts of climate change on Cape Cod, possible career paths in the sciences and related fields, and learn about how public meetings function in the democratic process.
Students attending included Hannah O'Dowd ’23, Malia Puls ’23, Tianya Liu ’24, Ben Catalano ’26, Grace Smith ’26, and Noelle Jatczak ‘26. The event garnered great press coverage from the local media. An article ran in today’s issue of the Cape Cod Times here and one in the Enterprise here.

Students Create Story Fence
Storywalks became popular during the pandemic as libraries looked for ways to conduct storytime sessions without going inside the library. Many libraries have continued this outdoor activity and now Cape Cod Academy has a storywalk on the Lower School Playground. Named the "Story Fence" by the group of middle school students who helped assemble and hang the story on the fence of the playground, this oversized storybook is fun to read and includes special activities designed by the middle school students during their Seminar classes to make the story fence even more interactive. Stop by the Lower School Library with your child to check out the story, Silly Sally!

Lower School Science Students Keep Busy
Last week was a busy week in science classes. Our third graders had their CCA Invention Convention Showcase, the culmination of a months-long process that involved identifying problems to solve, and designing, physically building, and presenting inventions in a state-wide contest through MIT. Kindergarteners, armed with field science clipboards, journeyed to Beacon Gardens on a field trip.

Fifth Graders Win in the Music Madness Bracket
This spring, our lower school students participated in The Music Madness Bracket. Each class submitted a song for the bracket and two songs faced off against one another each week until there was only one left. This year's theme was classical, so after students listened and discussed a composer, the history of the piece, instrumentation, and other musical details, they voted on their favorite song. Ms. Hawkins' second-grade class came in second with the "William Tell Overture" (used as the theme to The Lone Ranger), and the fifth-grade students’ submission of "He's a Pirate" (Pirates of the Caribbean) won the bracket.

Swiss Visitor Works with World Language Classes
Améline Fee, niece of CCA’s Director of Advancement, Hellie Swartwood, recently visited the world languages classes in the lower school. Améline was born and raised in Switzerland with her first languages being French and English. She visited our students to share her experiences growing up in Switzerland. She also helped them practice French. She gave presentations to each class and enjoyed cultural conversations with the second graders while reviewing a book about Switzerland with them. She worked one-on-one with the fourth and fifth graders on the French portion of their final language project.
