Next Week's Festive Activities
|
Next week will be exciting with a variety of activities planned. Here are the important dates to remember:
Wednesday, December 14
All families and friends are invited to attend our annual All-School Holiday Concert at 6:00 p.m. in the Lower School Gym. Participating students in grades 4 and up need to arrive by 5:30 p.m. Students in grades K-3 should arrive by 5:50 p.m. Please note that the evening concert is a "dress attire" event. There will be no after-school practices on Wednesday for boys and girls playing middle school basketball. Extended Day Care on Wednesday will end at 4:00 p.m.
Our School Store will be open in Chope Commons for holiday shopping prior to the concert.
Thursday, December 15
This is a dress day for all students as CCA's In-School Holiday Concert takes place. This is for students, staff, and faculty only. Our traditional "12 Days of Christmas" sing-a-long will be performed during this concert only, so students should review which line is sung by their grade (e.g. the fifth grade sings "Five golden rings."). Please note that this is a "dress" day for all students.
Friday, December 16
Lower school class holiday parties will take place. Middle and upper school students will enjoy holiday lunches in their advisories.

Spring Musical Auditions Announced
Cape Cod Academy is pleased to announce its spring musical production: Samantha Spade, Ace Detective. This is a film-noir-detective-story-musical by Georgia Stitt and Lisa Diana Shapiro. There will be two performances at Cape Cod Academy: Friday, April 14, at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, April 15, at 2:00 p.m.
The musical is about Samantha, a lonely, misfit. After getting bullied in camp, she retreats to the old detective movies she loves, entering a film noir fantasy world where she is Samantha Spade, Ace Detective. This show is perfect for all audiences and was the National Youth Arts 2014 Winner of Outstanding New Musical.
The cast is open to Cape Cod Academy students in grades 2 through 12. Auditions will be held on Tuesday, January 3 and Thursday, January 5 or by appointment after school in the Lower School Music Room. Students in grades 4-12 may audition for a lead role. Anyone who does not wish to audition for a named role, may sign up with Mrs. Koglin, CCA’s Music Teacher, at kkoglin@capecodacademy.org.

Additional COVID-19 Tests Will Be Distributed to Students Next Monday & Tuesday
Next week, Cape Cod Academy students, faculty, and staff will again have the opportunity to receive at-home COVID-19 test kits so they can test at home before returning to school after our winter vacation break. We ask that the tests be used no earlier than 24 hours prior to returning to school after the break. This is a voluntary program, but we encourage you to take advantage of this.
Tests will be distributed during drop-off at the Lower School & Upper School Circle on Monday and Tuesday mornings next week. Additionally, families can pick up their children's testing supplies in Chope Commons on Monday and Tuesday. Supplies are limited to two tests per student.
These tests have been provided by the Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS) and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). We have received enough tests to supply all our students and staff so that they can test at home before returning to school after our winter break.
If you need additional tests for yourself and families, most insurance plans cover up to eight at-home COVID tests per month through local pharmacies, such as CVS and Walgreens.

Absences from School
This is a reminder that parents should call the school’s main number (508-428-5400) by 7:50 a.m. to report their child’s absence from school or to communicate that their child will be arriving late. Voice mail is available for early morning or late evening calls. Attendance information can also be emailed to reception@capecodacademy.org.
If a student is planning to be absent for reasons other than illness, medical appointments, family emergencies, or religious observances, the school asks families to complete an Absence Release Form that can be found in the 2022-2023 CCA Family & Student Handbook on the Resource Board of the Parent Portal. The form is also accessible here.
Thank you for working with us to ensure our students receive the best education possible.

Thank You for Supporting
the Food Drive
The CSO Food Drive collected two full car loads of donations for the Family Pantry of Cape Cod in the run-up to Thanksgiving. Thanks to all our CCA families, students, faculty, and staff for their generosity in helping local families meet their needs. It is a tough time of the year for many on the Cape, but hopefully our efforts made it a little easier. And congratulations to Mr. Lewison's advisory group for winning the prize by collecting the most goods!

CCA Students Participate in the
Holiday Wishes Drive
Cape Cod Academy students in grades 6-12 will be participating in the Holiday Wishes Drive to support seven families through Child and Family Services Cape Cod this holiday season. This year, the project is being spearheaded by Community Service Organization members, Taylor Bodurtha '24 and Malia Puls '23. Our students will be purchasing gifts from a wish list provided by Child and Family Services for seven less-fortunate families who are facing enormous challenges. The goal is to provide these families a brighter holiday season. Our students have done this for many years now and are very proud that this has become a CCA tradition. If you would like to make a donation or have any questions, please contact Ms. Hall at ahall@capecodacademy.org.

Emergency Notification for School Closings
Please be aware of the three different ways we communicate school cancellations, delays, and/or unexpected early dismissals:
(1) We post an announcement on the landing page on our school website.
(2) We post an announcement on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
(3) We use BrightArrow, an automated notification system that will contact you directly via phone call, text message, and/or email. This third method is what we would use in case of any other type of school-wide emergency, like a “shelter in place".

Engineering Seminar
Middle school students are completing fun projects while learning the basic principles of engineering in their Introduction to Engineering seminar. This week, they made biodegradable plastics using four different materials: milk proteins, corn starch, agar, and gelatin. They found that the gelatin and agar made pretty good plastics, but there were many drawbacks to them, including that they dissolved in water and weren't very strong. They concluded that with enough time and many trials, they could come up with a passable biodegradable plastic, but it would take a lot of work.

Students Enjoy an Indiana Jones Obstacle Course
Ms. Marvullo created an entertaining obstacle course in lower school gym classes this week. Depicting an Indiana Jones' theme complete with music from the infamous movies, the course gave lower school students the opportunity to seek adventure by climbing ropes, balancing over the “lava pit” using our balance beam, and creating teamwork by building a puzzle bridge crossing the river.
