Parents' Nights
Take Place Next Week

Parents' Night for lower, middle, and upper school families will take place next week. Based on the success and efficiency of last year’s remote Parents’ Night, we have decided to conduct these gatherings via Zoom once again this year. One of the many benefits is that it allows parents with children in various divisions to participate in all teacher meetings.

The virtual Parents' Night for middle and upper school families will be on Wednesday, September 22 at 5:00 p.m. Early next Wednesday, families will receive an email with a personalized schedule of their child’s classes and the Zoom links for each class.

Lower school families will have their Parents' Night on Thursday, September 23 at 5:00 p.m. They, too, will receive a letter next week from their child's homeroom teacher with the Zoom links and schedule.

Parents' Night will include a snapshot of your child's classroom curriculum and activities. This night is not a time for individual conversations about your child. Those discussions will take place during in-person Parent-Teacher Conferences on October 28-29, 2021.

Expectations for Dress Code and Face Masks
It is very important for all students to follow Cape Cod Academy’s Dress Code Policy. The objective of the policy is to promote an atmosphere for academic success. Please read the policy carefully and review it with your child:

Additionally, everyone must wear a face covering when inside our buildings. Masks for everyone, regardless of age or vaccination status, is the most pragmatic approach at this time. We monitor this situation daily and will notify you if and when this policy changes. In the meantime, we are enforcing this policy for everyone at CCA.

The Dress Code policy and mask wearing procedures were shared with the students today. The discussion included expectations, enforcement, and consequences.

UPPER SCHOOL
Deadline to Participate in Unique MBL Discovery Program is September 22

CCA is excited to partner with University of Chicago's Marine Biological Laboratories in Woods Hole to offer CCA students a special discovery program that will run from November 1-3, 2021. Tailored for students entering grades 10-12, the program will teach students about CRISPR/Cas9 Genome editing of aquatic and marine organisms. In this course, students will learn how the revolutionary genome editing technology CRISPR/Cas9 works and will apply it in the lab to explore basic biological questions as well as the implications it has for improving human health. Genome editing will be used to understand zebrafish development, a key biomedical research species. Students will manipulate development genes to understand embryogenesis and organ formation and their connection to understanding human health and birth defects. The course will expose students to modern methods in microscopy. The ethical implications of genome editing will also be discussed.

This is a residential program where students will stay in the dormitories on campus in Woods Hole with a faculty chaperone. The cost is $1250 per student for the program, room, and board. Registration forms and payment must be completed by September 22, 2021. Paperwork and additional questions can be sent to Abby Wood at awood@capecodacademy.org.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT
Christian Sears is a middle school physical science and pre-algebra teacher at CCA, as well as the STEM curriculum coordinator and boys’ varsity soccer coach. Born in Maryland, Christian attended Landon School where he began a love and passion for independent schools and for science and math. A three-sport varsity letter earner in football, ice hockey, and lacrosse, Mr. Sears was also a lieutenant for the Bethany Beach Patrol in Bethany Beach, DE for nearly 20 years. After graduating from the University of Maryland with a BS degree in kinesiology, he returned to his alma mater to teach science and coach many different sports. A certified strength and conditioning specialist, Christian also dedicates himself to the athletic development of middle and upper school student athletes. He recently earned his MS degree in sport leadership and coaching through Western New England University's Business School.

Christian is married to Elizabeth Sears, a Massachusetts native and current world languages teacher in CCA’s lower school. They have two boys. Christian and his family lineage are no strangers to the area as he is the 12th generation of Sears that came over and established the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630. He is proud to have the next generation grow up where his heritage began. "I am thrilled to be able to teach and coach such talented students and work alongside some of the best, if not the best, teachers I have come across in my decade of teaching at independent schools,” he said. “Many have made me and my family feel at home already. We are proud to wear our school colors in public and are excited to lead in and out of the classroom. GO SEAHAWKS!"
