Small Business Roundtables: DOL’s Proposed Overtime Rule

The next Office of Advocacy Roundtable will meet virtually to discuss the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Proposed Overtime Rule. DOL proposes to increase the minimum salary threshold for the “white collar” exemption under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) from $35,568 to $55,068 annually. This threshold may be increased in the final rule based on the most recent data available, possibly up to $60,209. These meetings will be held virtually using Microsoft Teams.

A Great Day at the Gateway: September 23

Cape Cod Gateway Airport will host ‘A Great Day at the Gateway’ on Saturday, September 23rd from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the airport. 

The free event, with a theme of “nurturing the spirit of flight and honoring our military,” will feature sky diving demonstrations, military and civilian aircraft displays, flight simulators, face painting, girls in aviation programs, an aviation kids’ theater, music, food and more family-friendly activities. 


For those who pre-register their children, free flights are also available for kids ages 8-17 through the Young Eagles Program. 


Captain Rob Potter, the 21st Commanding Officer of U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, will be the special guest speaker at the event. He is responsible for all aviation support to Coast Guard missions across the First Coast Guard District, an area of operations that spans the U.S.-Canadian border to New Jersey and 1,300 miles offshore. Love Local Fest: September 24

Love Local Fests continues on Sunday, September 24th at Aselton Park in Hyannis for 11th season. The Love Local Fest features local artists, brands, makers and the small businesses that sell them, along with local food trucks, locally crafted beverages and kids activities all overlooking the beautiful Hyannis Harbor. Gather your crew and come show your support by shopping, eating, drinking and having fun!

Cape Cod Flippz - The Reveal: September 30

Join us Saturday September 30th for the 2nd annual Cape Cod Flippz event at the Sagamore Inn's Canalside Pavilion in Sagamore. Four teams will compete to sell their refurbished pieces of furniture to the public. Which ever team sells their pieces for the most profit wins the competition. There will be additional vendors for shopping, raffles, a live auction, activities for the children and more. The Sagamore Inn is a beautiful venue the property has an outdoor bar and beautiful grounds. This is a family friendly event. Steamship Authority Commemorates Start of Electric Bus Service 

The Woods Hole, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority celebrated the start of the first electric transit bus service on Cape Cod with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday at its Administrative Offices. The buses will be used to transport customers from the Authority’s off-site parking lots to its mainland ferry terminals in Hyannis and Woods Hole. 


The three 40-foot long, low-floor electric buses, along with the necessary charging infrastructure, were purchased from BYD North America following approval by the Authority Board in January 2021. The buses were delivered to the Authority in June 2023, and its bus drivers have spent the summer familiarizing themselves with their operation. The Authority has also been in the process of completing installation and activation of the necessary charging infrastructure at its Falmouth bus maintenance facility, its Palmer Avenue Parking Lot in Falmouth, and its Yarmouth Road Parking Lot in Hyannis.

Serviceware Survey for Capewide Food Establishments 

CARE for the Cape & Islands is surveying Capewide food establishments about their sustainability practices. The survey is part of a NOAA Sea Grant-funded project “Cape Cod Coalition to Shift Tourism Businesses to Sustainable Serviceware”. The goal of the project is to reduce the waste associated with single use plastic. The grant focuses on building a coalition in order to work together towards solutions. To better understand current practices and challenges CARE needs to gather some information from the Cape Cod business community. International Call for Entries

Digital Art is an artistic work or practice that uses digital technology as an essential part of the creative process. This includes the use of computers, mobile phones or portable handheld devices in conjunction with a variety of apps. Digital art can take many forms-“paintings” made entirely of pixels, collage, original photography, animation and video.

Artists of all levels are invited to submit up to five works of digital art to be juried into PIXELS, the first exhibition devoted exclusively to Digital Art at the Cape Cod Museum of Art (CCMoA). Subject matter is open to the discretion of the artist. The curators are looking for work that is creative and demonstrates the wide range of possibilities in the creation of Digital Art. PIXELS will also be shown on the Cape Cod Museum of Art website. Learn more >

Elder Services Announces FY2024 Title III Grantees:

$130,000 Awarded to 13 Community Agencies Serving Older Adults 

As the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) for our region, Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands receives Title III B and D Community Federal Grants. This year, Elder Services is able to award $130,000 in Federal Title III funding to 13 local partners providing need services to all people in the community aged sixty and older. Funding decisions are made by an advisory committee based on input received during public hearings and through a tri-annual community needs assessment conducted by Elder Services. Learn more >

Cape and Islands United Way Awards $20,000 in Micro Grants to Local Organizations 

The Cape and Islands United Way is happy to announce that in their most recent round of micro grant funding, $20,000, has been awarded for the following initiatives:

  • Read Happy (Hyannis) – promotes literacy by giving book and blanket packages to young parents and their children.
  • Neighborhood Falmouth (Falmouth) – helps seniors to age in place by providing social connection and transportation to medical appointments, the grocery store and errands. 
  • Cape Cod Toy Library (West Barnstable) – Curated lending library with collection of toys and books that promote learning through play experiences. 
  • The Warming Place (Nantucket) -- 7-day a week shelter that provides dinner, breakfast, laundry services and other resources for guests.
  • Cape Abilities (Hyannis and Falmouth) – funded program focuses on healthy changes in diet, improved cardiovascular functions and improved overall sense of wellbeing for individuals with disabilities.
  • Tommy’s Place (Centerville and Falmouth) – magical vacation homes for kids who are fighting cancer and their loved ones.

A typical micro grant is about $2,500 and is available on a rolling schedule. The goals of the program are to engage residents of all ages in projects that address local concerns to improve the community landscape, and to bring attention to the value and reward of volunteerism. Learn more >

Cape Cod Climate Change Collaborative Hires Executive Director

The Cape Cod Climate Change Collaborative (Climate Collaborative) announced that it has hired Miranda Daniloff Mancusi as full-time Executive Director as of September 11, 2023. “Miranda brings such experience and leadership skills to this position”, said Dorothy Savarese, Board President. “Her ability to drive change and bring people together for a common purpose will serve the Climate Collaborative exceptionally well as it continues to address the threat that the climate crisis poses to the Cape and Islands. With this hire, we will be able to drive the Climate Collaborative to its next chapter of growth.” Learn more >

Sheila Van Beeck Named Director of Event Sales for Ryan’s 

Ryan’s announced the appointment of Sheila Van Beeck as Director of Event Sales. Van Beeck will oversee the sales and execution of corporate outings, private parties, fundraisers and special functions at Ryan’s Ten Pin Eatery in Hyannis and Ryan’s South Yarmouth. Van Beeck is a veteran in the hospitality industry. She comes to Ryan’s from Tugboats in West Yarmouth, where she managed the daily operations of two bars.
