DID YOU KNOW? CAPE CORAL’S WATER SOURCES

We’ve recently received questions about why Cape Coral continues to allow commercial development when there are concerns about our water resources.

Here’s an important distinction: the City’s water supply and most private residential wells draw from different aquifers.

Most private wells are about 150–200 feet deep and draw from the Mid-Hawthorn Aquifer. The City’s wells are much deeper—about 500–800 feet—and draw from the Lower-Hawthorn Aquifer, where the water is treated through the City’s Reverse Osmosis plants.

As more North Cape Coral properties connect to City water through the Utilities Extension Project (UEP), fewer private wells rely on the Mid-Hawthorn Aquifer. This is helping reduce demand and support groundwater recovery.

The Mid-Hawthorn Aquifer water level has recovered after years of declining levels, reflecting the positive impact of transitioning properties to City water.

As Cape Coral grows, expanding centralized water service and transitioning properties away from private wells are important parts of protecting our water resources while supporting responsible development.

Different aquifers. Different water sources. Long-term planning for a sustainable water future.

Unsolicited Proposals

Did you know private entities can submit unsolicited proposals to local governments for public-private partnership projects?

Under Florida law, private entities may submit proposals to public agencies for projects that could potentially be developed through a public-private partnership. These proposals are reviewed by the City to determine whether they may provide a potential benefit to the community.

When the City receives an unsolicited proposal, the process may include reviewing the proposal, evaluating its feasibility and potential costs, and determining whether to move forward with the project or reject the proposal.

Public-private partnerships can provide opportunities to explore alternative ways to deliver public projects and services while considering potential impacts to taxpayers and the community.

Safety First

Safe Charging is a Superpower!

Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9 in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. Each year the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), creates a fire safety campaign for the week designed to raise awareness, promote safety, and engage the public. Lithium-ion battery safety is the topic this year with the theme “Safe Charging is a Superpower!” These everyday charging habits can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires:

  • Cheap charger? Don’t chance it. Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
  • Soft surface? Hard pass. Charge on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or bare floor.
  • Fully charged? Time to unplug. Unplug your device when it is fully charged.
  • For tools and rides, charge outside. Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging.
  • Feels hot? Stop using it. Stop using your device if it feels very hot, starts to swell, smells strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds.
  • On a flight? Keep it in sight. When on a plane, keep devices where you can see them while charging. Do not charge e-cigarettes or vapes on the plane. Tell a flight attendant if you notice a problem with your device.

Plug in. Power up. Stay safe.

Resident Reminders

Cape Coral Begins Changing Speed Limit Signs on Residential Roads

The City of Cape Coral will begin changing speed limit signs on local residential roads as part of the implementation of the City's Areawide Neighborhood Speed Limit Study.

Speed Limit Change

City crews will replace current 30 miles per hour speed limit signs with 25 miles per hour signs on applicable residential roadways in Cape Coral. Motorists are encouraged to remain attentive to changes in speed limit signage.

Safety Improvements

The sign changes implement the recommendations of the City's speed limit study, which evaluated speeds on residential streets. The goal is to improve roadway safety and support a safer environment for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

Enforcement

During the installation process, Cape Coral Police officers will issue warnings to drivers who exceed the new 25 miles per hour speed limit. The City will issue an additional public notice when the warning period ends, and the 25 miles per hour speed limit will become enforceable through citations.

Signage And Notifications

Residents may notice City crews working along roadways during the implementation period. Drivers are asked to use caution when approaching work areas.

Cape Coral Warns of Email Scam Impersonating City Department

The City of Cape Coral is warning residents and contractors about a fraudulent email scam impersonating the City’s Planning department.

The scammer sends an email that appears to come from "City of Cape Coral Planning and Zoning Commission", using the subject line to reference an “application approval” and sending the message from a non-government email address.

These scams often use free domains such as “@usa.com” to appear official. Similar fraudulent activity has been reported targeting municipalities nationwide. The emails are designed to look legitimate and are sent directly to residents and businesses.

Residents are advised to:

  • Avoid clicking any links or downloading attachments in suspicious emails.
  • Verify sender addresses carefully. Legitimate City departments will not send messages from "USA.com" domains.
  • Contact the City directly and do not use any contact information provided in suspicious emails.

For questions about rezoning applications, contact the City's Zoning Team directly.

Scam of the Week: This Text is a Trick

Your phone buzzes with a text claiming to be from Apple Pay account services. You glance down to read it, and you feel a rush of fear. The text states that someone just charged $8,250 to your account. The message gives you a case number and phone number and warns that a second $8,250 charge will go through in 35 minutes unless you call the phone number right away. With the clock ticking, you might feel panicked and pressured to call.

But this is actually a smishing, or text message phishing, scam! If you call the number in the text, you won't reach Apple Support. Instead, cybercriminals pretending to be Apple Support will ask for your name, credit card number, or the email address associated with your real Apple account. If you share these details, cybercriminals could take over your account and steal your money!

Follow these tips to avoid falling victim to a smishing scam:

  • If you get a text about a big, unexpected charge, don't call the number in the message. Instead, navigate to your Apple Pay app or to your bank's website directly to check your account.
  • Never share your banking details or personal information with someone who contacts you unexpectedly, even if they claim to be from Apple Support.
  • Cybercriminals often use deadlines and fear to rush you into making quick decisions. Always stop and think before you act!
