Cape Coral Canal Dredging Project Update

The City of Cape Coral continues to make progress on its citywide canal dredging program, an important initiative to maintain more than 400 miles of canals and protect the long-term health and safety of local waterways.

What to know:

A new citywide permit is required following the expiration of the previous permit in 2023. The permitting process includes detailed state and federal reviews and can take time to complete. To help keep the overall project moving forward, some areas—including Redfish Point, Matlacha Isles, and Units 44–64—are being addressed through separate permits.

Progress update:

The permit for Redfish Point has been approved, and dredging in that area began in January 2026.

What’s next:

Crews are currently conducting surveys to prioritize canals based on need and boat traffic. Future dredging efforts will move forward in phases as permits are secured and funding becomes available.

Dear Cape Coral Residents,

As we move into April, Cape Coral continues to grow. Our shared goal is to keep Cape Coral a safe, well maintained community where families and businesses can thrive.

City Council took an important step by reducing the millage rate for Fiscal Year 2026 while still providing the funding needed to support essential infrastructure in the City. This decision reflects Council’s commitment to fiscal responsibility—carefully balancing the desire to lessen the tax burden on our residents with the need to invest in critical priorities such as public safety, roads, drainage, and utilities.

Looking ahead, Council will be making difficult choices for the 2027 budget based on updated information from the Lee County Property Appraiser, and we will continue to evaluate how to best allocate limited resources to protect our quality of life.

We are also closely monitoring any property tax reform proposals at the state level and evaluating how potential changes could affect Cape Coral residents in the years ahead. Ensuring that we understand and plan for these impacts is essential to maintaining a safe and sustainable city providing essential services to our community.

Resident Reminders

Cape Coral Warns of Email Scam

The City of Cape Coral is warning residents and contractors about a fraudulent email scam impersonating the City’s Planning Commission.

The scammer sends an email that appears to come from the City’s Planning Commission, using the subject line to reference an “invoice settlement” and sending the message from a non-government email address.

These scams often use free domains such as “@usa.com” to appear official. Similar fraudulent activity has been reported targeting municipalities nationwide.

The emails are designed to look legitimate and are sent directly to residents and businesses. Anyone receiving a suspicious message claiming to be from the City should avoid responding, refrain from clicking any links, and contact the City's Zoning Team directly for questions about rezoning applications.
