The CTE Support on Teaching in the Era of GenAI

At the Centre for Teaching Excellence, we offer evidence-based teaching and learning perspectives on new and emerging learning technologies. We provide professional development opportunities and support focused on a critical understanding of, and creative engagement with, tools that may be useful for teaching and learning.

Recognizing that GenerativeAI (GenAI) has been particularly impactful, here’s what we’ve been working on lately:

CTE GenAI Guidelines

Focused on helping you navigate decisions around teaching and learning in the era of GenAI, these guidelines are regularly reviewed for alignment with institutional policies and guidelines and advancements in the field, they also include tools to support your teaching. We encourage you to revisit them regularly.

GenAI FAQ for Students

This FAQ is designed to help students gain some critical GenAI literacy skills, use tools for learning, and navigate questions of academic integrity. Available on the CTE website, it can be linked to your course eLearn or Teams site.

Updated Academic Integrity Module for Students

This training for students on navigating academic integrity is being updated to include citations and decisions around the use of GenAI.

GenAI Quickstart: Foundations for Faculty

Curious about GenAI but don’t know where to start? This series of micromodules (10 minutes each) from McGill will help you get started.

Departmental Workshops Available by Request

Contact CTE to discuss a workshop designed to fit the needs of your department, school, or faculty.

Featured Workshops

GenAI Workspace

The GenAI Workspace is a hands-on space for faculty to apply GenAI tools to learning activities and projects in their teaching practice. Instructors may bring specific tasks, questions, ideas, or learning activities and work directly with one of CTE’s Educational Developers, Learning and Instructional Design Specialists, or Educational Technologists to complete a project for their class or general teaching. Register for one of the first two sessions to bring your questions about using AI in class or for a specific learning project. Then, meet regularly in small group sessions with CTE in the remote AI makerspace to complete your project.

By participating in this workshop, you will critically evaluate and integrate generative AI in your classroom so that you can effectively teach this to your students. The workshop emphasizes understanding Generative AI's limitations, biases, and ethical implications to empower students to use these tools thoughtfully and responsibly. You will also be given teaching tools that can be adapted for your own discipline.

Navigating Generative AI in Education

It's been more than two years since Generative AI became a hot topic in teaching and learning. Where are we at today?

The AI Sandwich

Is it possible to layer collaboration with Generative AI tools with your own creative and intellectual work in a way that maximizes the strengths of both?

It’s Math Not Magic

Too much of what we hear about Generative AI uses terms and imagery that reference the human brain to describe what it does. It’s a compelling story, but it’s not true.
