August 2021
While there are many uncertainties about living and working during a pandemic, what is certain is that the CTE team is here to support you. I am excited about the collaborative programming the team has developed and am continually impressed with the care and optimism they have demonstrated throughout these many months. We are bringing back our most successful programs and have developed new initiatives based on faculty requests for informal opportunities to explore teaching topics. See our full Fall programming on our website. We also have a new live chat feature on our webpage to make it easier to connect with us.

Fall 2021 Book Club: Grading for Equity

Let’s explore together the messy, uncomfortable, important topic of grading by joining the CTE’s fall 2021 book club selection, Grading for Equity: what it is, why it matters, and how to transform schools and classrooms by Joe Feldman (2018). This book delivers the theories, the research, and the strategies to inspire us to make equitable grading a reality in our courses. Sign up here.
Wondering Wednesdays: Exploring Teaching & Learning

What?! Wondering Wednesdays are an opportunity for faculty to come together to explore, question, brainstorm, or discuss a teaching and learning idea, a topic that inspires you and your students, a research idea you are investigating, a scholarly article that everyone seems keen to read. Bring your lunch and a sense of humour because Wondering Wednesdays promise to be relaxed yet stimulating, fun yet serious. Sign up here
Getting Ready for First Week of Class
Building Community
As we return to campus this fall, students, faculty, and staff may experience some anxiety after many months of learning and working from home. A renewed focus on community can help to re-engage students in the on campus learning experience.

When students feel a sense of community in the classroom, they are more likely to take ownership for their own learning and feel more motivated. The Community of Inquiry Framework (COI) provides a useful guide for developing community in your course.

The COI framework encourages us to ask: How will students interact with the instructor, the class material or content, and each other in order to meet the course’s objectives?
Here are some first-week activities to get you started!
Teaching Presence (Student to Instructor Interaction)

  • Send a welcome message before the first official class
  • Plan which online communication tools you will use and do so from the beginning
Cognitive Presence
(Student to Content
Interaction)

  • Use formative assessments to find out what students already know about the course content
  • Clearly communicate the course objectives and how students will be expected to meet them
Social Presence
(Student to Student Interaction)

  • Try out some icebreakers to help students get to know one another
  • Create opportunities for discussion right from the first class, even online
Making Ed Tech Work for You & Your Students
Educational technology has advanced rapidly during the Covid-19 pandemic. CapU’s return to campus will be met by students that are primed for using ed tech whether the class is face to face, online or blended. For inspiration on technology enhanced teaching and active learning, check out this Asynchronous Cookbook, or connect with us for additional ideas.
Fall Course Syllabus Template

Prepping for fall? CTE has prepared this template to help instructors create their Fall 2021 syllabus. Several sample statements are offered for instructors to adopt, adapt, or revise as needed.

Academic Integrity for Fall
Turnitin at CapU
In Summer 2021, Capilano University purchased a university-wide license for Turnitin, an originality checking and plagiarism prevention service. Turnitin is integrated into eLearn making it simple to use for instructors and students on the Assignment, Forum and Workshop activities. To introduce this service at Capilano, CTE is offering several sessions, workshops and resources. Visit the CTE webpage or use this link to book a session.
Academic Integrity Module in eLearn

Consider adding the self-paced learning module available on eLearn as a prep activity for an exam or essay assignment, as a pre-course activity or as a response to an academic integrity violation (per Section 2 of Academic Integrity Procedure 2017-05-01). Learn more.
