CTE NEWSLETTER
September 2022
Your exciting new term is starting and, whether you are teaching in person or online, CTE is here to support you. We’re thrilled that the new Certificate of University Teaching and Learning (CUTL) has been embraced by so many new and returning faculty. You can find these workshops listed below and on our website cte.capilanou.ca under the top menu ‘Learn’. This month, we highlight a core part of the CUTL with a focus on assessment (see below). Join us for a workshop or drop into Fir 402 and let us know how we can support your teaching.

Assessments
assessment
Though the school year has just begun, midterms are right around the corner! Have you thought about ungrading? “Ungrading doesn’t mean giving no grade; it means finding new ways to decide on grades” (Levine, 2021).

In one case, detailed here, an instructor at the University of Pittsburgh started small by “ungrading” a single writing assignment. Not only did the instructor find the quality of the writing to be high, but found they were better able to respond to the content of assignment.

Want to know more about ungrading? Check out our blog-post and request a SparkShop for your department!

Kaltura
In July 2022, Kaltura video services were moved to a new server for all post secondary institutions in BC. Any eLearn courses from Spring 2021 onwards will have had their links automatically updated. Likewise, departmental resource sites in eLearn should have updated. Kaltura video links have NOT been updated for:
  • Teams sites
  • WordPress (e.g. ePortfolio sites)
  • eLearn course sites before Spring 2021

If you have any broken links, you will need to go through them one by one and re-link them to the media by adding them again to your course or WordPress page (in the same way you added them in the first place). If you have any problems doing this, just book some time with an Educational Technologist in the CTE and we can walk you through the process.
