Giving Survivors More Than a Name
Most Americans don’t realize that human trafficking isn’t a distant, hidden crime. It’s happening in their own communities, sometimes just down the street. For Courtney Schmackers ’13, executive director of She Has A Name, turning that awareness gap into informed action has become a passion.
She knows how limiting that image is. As the leader of a Columbus-based nonprofit combating human trafficking through education and survivor care, she’s spent a years helping people understand the fuller, more uncomfortable reality.
“We’re like the bookends to the anti-trafficking movement,” she explains. “On the front end, we’re focusing on prevention, equipping caregivers and professionals to recognize and respond to exploitation before it starts. On the back end, we’re offering scholarships for survivors, educating sex buyers about what’s really on the other end of that transaction, and working with partners to fill in the care gaps.”

| | Trinity Lutheran Seminary | | Faculty and Staff: Join Us for Undergraduate Welcome Weekend | |
An early connection between students and faculty/staff members outside of class is one of the greatest predictors of whether a student will persist at an institution and complete a degree. At Capital, we start this interaction during Summer Orientation and continue it during Welcome Weekend. More than ever, establishing and maintaining the connection with students is essential to their retention and success. Allow us to call your attention to some early opportunities to engage:
SATURDAY, AUGUST 16
7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Faculty and staff members are encouraged to lend a hand with move-in. You can choose to carry something light – we have student muscle to handle the heavy lifting – or use this as an opportunity to simply welcome new students and their families. To volunteer, please register at https://capital.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_02l0e4mMTJvDCl0.
Please note: Most first-year and transfer students will move into residence halls Saturday morning. Spots will be available in F3 for people arriving early (before 7:30 a.m.), S3 (along the tennis courts) and the D lot on a first-come, first-serve basis. All other lots will be closed for move-in usage. On-street parking is also available on the south end of Pleasant Ridge via Francis. Please see the campus map to locate these lots.
CapFam Barbecue
11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Capital Center Field House
Join new students and their families and guests for a barbecue lunch. This is also a great opportunity to catch up with your colleagues.
New Student Opening Ceremony/Gate Ceremony
3 p.m.
Capital Center Performance Arena; Memorial Gateway
At 2:45 p.m., the College faculty will assemble in academic regalia in The Capital Center Field House. Staff (along with students and their families) will assemble in the Performance Arena. The short Opening Ceremony will be followed by the faculty-led procession of the incoming students through Memorial Gateway. In the event of inclement weather, the Gate Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, August 19, at 2 p.m.
MONDAY, AUGUST 18
Campus Resource Amazing Race
9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
As part of our Welcome Weekend programming, new students will participate in an interactive resource challenge modeled after The Amazing Race. Students will race in teams to different campus offices, where they will receive clues, complete mini-challenges, and gather essential information about campus resources available to students.
Academic Afternoon
2:30 to 5 p.m.
Departments and Schools will meet with students in various campus locations
Please check with your department chair or dean for specific information about the plans for Academic Afternoon. Units are encouraged to imaginatively use this time to orient students to departments, identify academic expectations, and make initial connections with academic advisors and departmental faculty members. This is also a great opportunity to double-check the course schedules of the incoming students.
