Partnering With the Gear Shop for Capital Merchandise

Under Capital’s contract for the bookstore, the University Gear Shop (UGS) is our preferred partner for branded clothing, guest speaker gifts, promotional items (such as mugs, lanyards, and hats), and office furniture, such as sofas, chairs, and branded mats.

UGS offers the campus community a wide range of options, competitive pricing, and greater control over the customization of promotional items. It provides customized products at the same or lower costs compared to competitors.

As our preferred partner, UGS should be your first point of contact for quotes on such items, which can then be compared with other vendors.

This partnership has proven to be mutually beneficial, enhancing school spirit, strengthening the Capital brand, and fostering a sense of community. Additionally, a portion of all sales through this partnership is returned to Capital, directly supporting student initiatives and programs.

For your convenience, faculty and staff may use departmental GL codes to pay directly for essential class supplies such as notebooks, pens, pencils, goggles, markers, and more. For in-store purchases, faculty can take advantage of a 10% UGS employee discount.

To view the new on-demand print site, click here. This platform offers Capital-branded embroidered apparel and gifts with no minimum order, delivered to your door within three to five business days. You’ll need to register under Capital University before browsing the offerings - which are both attractive and reasonably priced.

If you have any questions or would like to inquire about your next bulk, special, or custom apparel order, please contact Moses Amaya, Gear Shop manager, at 614-236-6629 or capital@getugear.com.

Capital University’s Student Showcase

This multimedia exhibition showcases a variety of works created by the students of Capital University.

What Were You Wearing? Sexual Assault Education and Prevention

In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Wellness and Prevention invites the campus community to experience “What Were You Wearing?”- a powerful survivor art exhibit. This display features firsthand narratives and recreated clothing descriptions from Capital students, faculty, and staff who have experienced sexual or power-based violence. The survivors recall what they were wearing during the assault, and a recreation of their outfits, along with their story, is displayed in the exhibit.

Through these stories, we challenge harmful victim-blaming narratives and reflect on the cultural myths that perpetuate power-based violence. This annual exhibit serves as a space for education, empathy, and solidarity, honoring the voices of survivors.

We invite you to join us in unlearning one of our culture’s most persistent rape myths and fostering a community of support and awareness.

Closing Reception for Anne Frank Speaker Series

The closing reception for the Anne Frank Exhibit will feature a discussion by Martin Claar, assistant professor of Political Science, on “The Legacy of Silence: Frank, Roosevelt, and the Universal Declaration of Human Right.” The presentation shows the connection between Anne Frank’s experiences as extolled in her diaries and Eleanor Roosevelt’s aspirations to protect people like Frank after reading the diaries. The result is an expansive legal body, known as the Human Rights Regime, which begins with Roosevelt’s work on the Universal Declaration of Rights as a protection of the silent – the persecuted and harmed members of our global community. Several major treaties will be examined and some modern challenges to the fulfillment of the Human Rights Regime will be discussed.

Following the presentation and a Q&A, there will be a moderated panel with the student docents responsible for the set-up and delivery of the Anne Frank Exhibit. Special thank you to our private donors and sponsors at OHGMEC and Bexley Community Foundation for supporting the Anne Frank Series at Capital University.

Commencement Volunteer Opportunities

The Commencement Committee and the Office of Meeting and Event Services need your help in making our commencement ceremonies a success!

On Wednesday, May 7, volunteers will be needed from 4:30 to 8 p.m. for the Graduate Student Commencement and Hooding, taking place in the Conservatory of Music’s Mees Hall. Light refreshments are available afterward.

On Saturday, May 10, volunteers will be needed from 9 a.m. through 5 p.m. for the 175th Undergraduate Commencement in the Capital Center’s Field House. Volunteers may sign up in various shifts. Hospitality and catering will be provided for all volunteers.

Volunteering at Commencement is a great way for faculty and staff to say farewell to the students they have watched grow over the past years, and a way for students to see their fellow classmates become Capital graduates.

If you would like to be a part of this exciting and memorable occasion, please email the Robert Fleming, volunteer coordinator, at rfleming@capital.edu.

Mathias Hits a High Note with OAKE Lifetime Achievement Award

Sandra Mathias, Ph.D., a distinguished music educator, has been honored with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the Organization of American Kodály Educators (OAKE). Mathias has dedicated over 50 years to advancing Kodály-inspired music education in the U.S. and abroad. She founded the Kodály Institute at Capital University and established the Columbus Children’s Choir, leaving an indelible mark on music education in Central Ohio.

Reflecting on her career, Mathias said, “I think of all the people that brought me to this place. Past teachers that I happened to have in the Kodály philosophy and then being fortunate enough to live this long and seeing my students, who I taught, using that philosophy.”

“I always say that I feel like a farmer planting seeds, and I am just so blessed to have amazing crops that have grown and flourished. While [the award] is being given to me, I feel like it’s really because of the success of students passing it on. It’s very humbling.”

Summer Hours 2025

The end of a challenging yet successful academic year is fast approaching. Capital University recognizes that employees appreciate the opportunity to work an adjusted schedule in the summer. Therefore, we will once again adjust our office hours for the summer to 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. daily. All employees will still be paid for their full work day. And for clarity, this means any vacation days taken during this time also equate to a normal full work day.

Summer hours will be in effect as follows:

Bexley Campus:

  • Monday, May 12 through Friday, August 8

Capital University Law School

  • Monday, May 19 through Friday, August 8

Trinity Lutheran Seminary:

  • Monday, May 19 through Friday, August 8

Scheduling needs may vary by department to continue to meet the various needs across the university during the summer.  A consistent level of campus safety, service to our students, and functionality of campus facilities must be maintained, so supervisors should coordinate staff scheduling with the appropriate vice president to ensure their constituencies are well served.

Thank you for your continued hard work and service to Capital University!
