Capital You from Capital University

January 15, 2025

Capital University transforms lives by empowering an inclusive community of learners through engaging academic, co-curricular, and professional experiences.

34th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Learning

Capital is proud to host the 34th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Learning on Monday, January 20, 2025. This year's theme, "Legacy of Courage: Celebrating the Voice that Inspired Change," invites students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community to honor Dr. King's work through a day of inspiration, reflection, and community engagement.

The event will feature State Representative and Assistant Minority Leader Dontavius Jarrells as the Gay S. Steele Keynote Speaker. Serving his third term in the Ohio General Assembly, Rep. Jarrells represents House District 1, encompassing the City of Bexley and parts of Columbus.

For over three decades, Capital University has been committed to recognizing, celebrating, and embodying the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Rather than treating this day as a "day off," we encourage our campus and community members to engage in a "day on" — a day to be inspired by Dr. King’s vision, reflect on his contributions to civil rights, and actively participate in community-building efforts.

Capital University Library and the Department of History Anne Frank Series

Anne Frank: A History for Today

Capital University Library Services and the Department of History proudly present “Anne Frank: A History for Today.” Curated by the Anne Frank Center at the University of South Carolina, the official U.S. partner of the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, the exhibition tells the story of Anne against the backdrop of the Holocaust and the Second World War. The exhibition aims to inform visitors about the history of the Holocaust from the perspective of Anne and her family; show visitors that differences between people exist in all societies; encourage visitors to analyze the concepts of intolerance, persecution, exclusion, mutual respect, human rights, democracy, and their meaning for us; and convince visitors that the creation of a society in which differences between people are respected is not something automatic.

Human Resources

Review Your First-of-the-Year Earnings Statements

As we start the new year, it’s very important all employees take the time to review their first-of-the-year Earnings Statements in myCAP to ensure all 2025 benefit and other elections are accurate. If you have any questions regarding your benefit deductions or other elections, please contact Ashley Huff (Benefits) or Renee Bergman (Payroll).

W-2 Consent Reminder

If you have not already done so, please consider receiving this year’s W-2 online. To elect this option, complete the online CONSENT (MyCAP>Employee>Tax Information) to view and print your W-2 forms! Besides immediate availability, it’s a tremendous cost savings to Capital, as it will reduce the number of physical W-2s we have to print, process, and mail.

Paper copies of W-2s will be postmarked and mailed no later than January 31, 2025, for former employees and those who do not consent to receive online copies.

HSA - Changes to Employer Contributions

As a reminder, the full annual employer HSA contribution will be added to eligible employee accounts by the end of January after all payrolls have been completed (rather than incrementally throughout the year).

Online Leaves Implementation

The Colleague/myCAP Online Leaves system is now available!

All regular full- and part-time employees (faculty, staff, and administrators) should have access to this online tool to request and receive approval for vacation and/or sick time. Instructions were emailed to all employees on December 11, 2024, from Capital Communications.

Employees and managers will have real-time access to current vacation and sick time balances. There will no longer be a lag due to the manual processes that currently exist. **Supervisors should now have a "Supervisor Employee Leave Balance" tab in myCAP.

The use of this new process within our current myCAP system is required for all vacation and sick time eligible employees and their managers. This streamlined request/tracking system is quite intuitive and therefore, training time should be minimal.

For non-exempt/hourly/bi-weekly paid employees: You will enter requests prior to taking leave and when approved, your hours will show up on the appropriate dated timesheet under the correct category. If your leave has changed since approval, you can easily correct your timesheet and then submit for supervisor approval as usual. If sick time was taken and not requested ahead of time, you will simply enter it in your timesheet. If payroll has already been processed for any incorrect leave, you will need to contact your supervisor and payroll to update your balance.

Your current balances for vacation and sick leave are listed in myCAP.

For exempt/salaried/semi-monthly paid employees: You will enter leave requests prior to taking leave and when approved, your hours will automatically be deducted from your balance. If your leave changes, even after the date, contact your supervisor to reject your original request and your balance will be corrected. You can resubmit the correct leave if necessary. You will no longer have to report your vacation/sick time to your administrative assistant the following month.

Your current balances for vacation and sick leave are listed in myCAP.

We appreciate your support as we continue to make improvements to our HR processes. If you have questions, please reach out to Renee Bergman at rbergman@capital.edu or Debbie Gaitten at dgaitten@capital.edu.

Bexley Open Skating

Ice Skate Bexley for residents and non-residents is back at Jeffrey Park! Online registration is required, as the maximum number of skaters per time slot is limited to 40. The fee is $6 per skater and includes skate rentals. Click here for information and registration.

Breaking a Sweat: Research Study Unveils Heat Loss with Thermal Imaging

Armed with a thermal imaging camera, a team of students from health and sport sciences and biology set out to uncover how long-distance and sprinters shed excess heat after a run. The experiment focused on three distinct groups: long-distance runners, sprinters, and non-athlete controls. All participants were Capital students and ran an eight-minute mile on the indoor track, with thermal images and heart rate data collected before and after the run at five-minute intervals.

Led by Kimberly Heym, Ph.D., lecturer, biology, the student researchers Lazaro Fuentes, Mia Sanchez, Sadie Weaver, Stevyn Butts, and Ryan Suever formed a close-knit team.
