Tri-County Collaboration Delivers Powerful Professional Learning for Community School Leaders

On August 4, 2025, The Tri-County region came together in an unprecedented collaboration to host a professional learning day for principals and CS coordinators. The Tri-County Community Schools Professional Learning event included Colusa County Office of Education, Sutter County Superintendent of Schools and Yolo County Office of Education and brought together leadership from across the region to deepen understanding of community schools and strengthen cross-county connections.

The day’s learning sessions focused on:

  • Understanding Community Schools – Building a shared foundation for the model’s vision and goals.
  • Transformational vs. Transactional Practices – Shifting from short-term solutions to sustainable, student-centered change.
  • Strengthening the Principal–Coordinator Relationship – Enhancing collaboration to better serve students and families.

A key theme throughout the day was the capacity-building strategy of shared leadership—recognizing that community schools thrive when decision-making and problem-solving are distributed among leaders, coordinators, staff, and community partners. This approach was modeled in the event planning itself, as the three counties worked hand-in-hand to design the learning experience.

Participants described the event as both energizing and practical, highlighting the value of engaging in real conversations about leadership roles, shared challenges, and collaborative solutions. By the end of the day, attendees left not only with strategies they could implement immediately, but also with strengthened networks of colleagues committed to the success of their community schools.

This professional learning opportunity showcased the power of regional collaboration. The planning teams from all three counties ensured the event was tailored to meet the unique needs of their districts—proving that when we unite resources, expertise, and leadership, we amplify impact.

R-TAC Partner Highlight

Parent Teacher Home Visits (PTHV) is a foundational practice that brings families and educators together through relationship-building visits. Using PTHV’s proven model that originated in Sacramento nearly 30 years ago, educators use an asset-based and culturally-responsive approach to listen to, learn from, and collaborate with families in service of student success and well-being. These visits spark trust, open communication, and collaboration – key ingredients for strong community schools. The Sacramento County Office of Education is committed to authentic family engagement and proudly partners with PTHV to strengthen home-school partnerships. Want to bring this powerful practice to your community school? Reach out to info@pthvp.org to learn more.

As we begin a new school year, building strong relationships must be our foundational first step. Meaningful student and family engagement starts with trust—and trust grows through genuine connection. When educators take time to learn about families’ strengths, stories, and hopes, we create a shared foundation for student success. The Parent Teacher Home Visits model offers practical tools and proven strategies to help build those connections from day one. We invite you to explore these resources as you lay the groundwork for a year of partnership, purpose, and progress.
