This week marked week three of the Regular Legislative Session. We saw multiple priority pieces of legislation move through committees. Both SB 1700 by Senator Joe Gruters, (R-Sarasota) and HB 1199 by Representative Erin Grall, (R- Vero Beach) regarding funding for the School Readiness program passed unanimously out of the Senate Education Committee and House PreK-12 Appropriations Committee respectively. They both head to their second committee of reference. In addition to this legislation, SB 1048 by Senator Manny Diaz, (R- Hialeah Gardens) passed the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Education. This legislation revises requirements for student assessments to include progress monitoring.

A bill to overhaul Florida’s background screening process for entities that work with children went to its first committee stop on Wednesday. HB 1505 by Representative Dana Trabulsy, (R- St. Lucie) passed unanimously in the House Education and Employment Committee and now heads to the House Health & Human Services Committee. This committee also heard an update on the implementation of school safety measures established following the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Finally, HB 195 the Juvenile Diversion Program Expunction bill by Representative David Smith, (R- Winter Springs) passed unanimously out of the House Justice Appropriations Subcommittee and now heads to the Judiciary Committee. As you might recall, the Senate counterpart is in its final committee of reference before heading to the floor.
