2025 LEGISLATIVE SESSION: WEEK 7

Welcome to Capitol Connection week 7. This week committee weeks began to wind down with the 50th day rule going into effect Tuesday, April 22nd which states no Senate committees may be called unless approved by the President. With this rule going into effect any legislation that is not through its committee stops by Tuesday will have a nominal path forward.


On Monday, April 14th  the House PreK-12 Budget Subcommittee took up HB 859 School Readiness Program by Representative Chase Tramont, (R- Port Orange) which passed favorably out of its second committee.


On Tuesday, April 15th the Senate Appropriations Committee on Health and Human Services heard SB 614 Public Education of Background Screening Requirements by Senator Tina Polsky, (D- Boca Raton) which passed unanimously. The House Health Care Budget Subcommittee took up HB 1085 Children’s Medical Services Program by Representative Vanessa Oliver, (R- Punta Gorda) which passed favorably. Finally, the House Health & Humans Services Committee heard HB 1089 Newborn Screenings by Representative Erika Booth, (R-Orlando) which passed its final committee stop.


On Wednesday, April 16th the Senate Committee on Rules took up SB 868 Social Media Use by Minors by Senator Blaise Ingoglia, (R- Spring Hill) which passed its final committee stop. During the House SessionHB 1367 School Attendance by Representative Erika Booth, (R-Orlando) was passed unanimously off the House floor and is in messages.


On Thursday, April 17th the  House Education & Employment Committee took up a series of bills including HB 859 School Readiness Program by Representative Chase Tramont, (R- Port Orange),  HB 877 School Readiness Program by Representative Robin Bartleman, (D- Weston), HB 879 Young Adults who are Homeless or were in the Child Welfare System by Representative Alex Rizzo, (R- Hialeah) , HB 969 Reporting of Student Mental Health Outcomes by Representative Hillary Cassel, (R-Hillary), HB 1255 Education by Representative Dana Trabulsy, (R- Ft. Pierce), HB 1539 Materials Harmful to Minors by Representative Doug Bankson, (R- Apopka), and HB 1267 Education by Representative Demi Busatta, (R- Coral Gables) which all passed their final committee stop. Additionally, HB 1225 Employment of Minors by Representative Monique Miller, (R- Palm Bay) was heard in the same committee and passed its second committee stop. In the House Judiciary Committee the committee heard HB 1405 Juvenile Justice by Representative Berny Jacques, (R- Clearwater) passing its fourth and final committee stop. Lastly the Senate Committee on Fiscal Policy took up SB 584 Young Adult Housing Supports by Senator Ileana Garcia, (R- Miami), SB 1102 School Readiness Program by Senator Alexis Calatayud, (R- Miami), SB 1310 Reporting on Student Mental Health Outcomes by Senator Jennifer Bradley, (R- Fleming Island), SB 1344 Juvenile Justice by Senator Corey Simon, (R-Quincy), and SB 1590 Educator Preparation by Senator Danny Burgess , (R- Zephyrhills) which all passed their final committee.

Require the Just Read, Florida! Office to work with the Florida Center for Reading Research to identify certain personnel and reading coaches to participate in specified training; require that intensive reading instruction be provided to students who have reading deficiencies; require the Florida Center for Reading Research to develop content for specified training.
