April 24, 2020

Tuesday, April 21, was San Jacinto Day in Texas, a special day that celebrates the Battle of San Jacinto. It was the final battle of the Texas Revolution where Texas won its independence from Mexico. It is important in these times to take pride in our history and to know that Texans are a mighty strong force when we work together towards a common goal.

My office has set up a COVID-19 specific webpage on www.danhuberty.com for updates and state agency specific information. As this situation continues to develop, we will do our best to get all relevant information out through newsletters, as well as through posts on my Facebook page.

Due to the COVID-19 virus, both the Capitol and the District offices will remain closed. However, my staff will be teleworking and will be available via email. Please continue to follow safe social distancing and hygiene practices during this time, and know that we are available if needed. Be aware that all agencies are prioritizing COVID-19 virus related constituent casework before other matters.

The Texas House of Representatives is consolidating COVID-19 related information. To access the COVID-19 information, visit house.texas.gov/coronavirus.

Sincerely,
Capitol & District Office Closure Notice
Both the Capitol office and District office will remain closed in line with Governor Abbot's executive orders. Our offices will remain functioning, with staff working remotely. Please utilize email communication with our office during this time, via the email contact information at the bottom of this newsletter.

Additionally we have set up an additional phone line that our staff will be able to monitor remotely. Our new phone number for the duration of the COVID-19 situation will be (281) 858-3354.
Remembering Dr. Guy Sconzo
I was informed this week of the passing of my dear friend, Dr. Guy Sconzo. Guy (no pun intended but he would’ve laughed) was one of the “good guys”. I had an opportunity to work with him over the last 15 years. He was a mentor, friend, sounding board but most importantly a true gentleman.

I’ll cherish the time we spent with each other when I was on the Humble ISD School Board, but our relationship strengthened when he retired and started working in Austin for the Fast Growth School Coalition. He spent his life focused on children and helping them become good humans.

He touched so many lives, and made you feel like you were the most important person when engaging you. He was and is our friend forever. While I will miss him dearly, (I lost my education Muse) I will celebrate his life by being thankful for the time we had with him and not the time we will not.

Please keep Diane, Jennifer, Michael and their families in your prayers.

West Lake Houston Bridge Final Repairs Scheduled
Houston Public Works will conduct a bridge repair project on the West Lake Houston Parkway Bridge beginning Monday, April 27. The project consists of replacing fourteen bearing pads. The cost of the project is $307,400 and will be funded through the Dedicated Drainage and Street Renewal Fund. The contractor for the project is ISI Contracting, Inc. The work is expected to be completed by Wednesday, May 20, weather permitting.

On Monday, April 27, work will begin at 7:00 a.m. by closing of the northbound lanes of the bridge. Two-way traffic will be redirected to the southbound lanes. Construction activities are expected to take place Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. In addition to the road closures, pedestrian sidewalks along the bridge will be barricaded and closed for safety.

Please be aware of flagmen and orange traffic cones in place on-site assisting with traffic flow through the construction zone. All lanes of the bridge and pedestrian sidewalks will reopen following the completion of the project on Wednesday, May 20, weather permitting.

This project follows the completion of temporary repairs done by Houston Public Works  last October after three bearing pads slipped from their concrete beams. The work completed this month is similar to  repairs completed in 2015 , which included the replacement of deformed or slipped bearing pads.
