March 6, 2023
Today marks the 57th day of the 105-day legislative session. Last week (and this weekend) the Legislature moved from policy and budget committee meetings to work in caucus meetings to determine priorities, and on the floor to consider bills. March 8 marks the deadline for policy bills to pass the chamber of origin. This week, legislative committee meetings will resume as bills from the opposite house are being considered for legislative action.

Budget Talks Continue
The work on the state operating budget for 2023-25 continues as budget leaders continue to meet to determine state spending priorities. The Senate budget is scheduled to be released first, shortly after the March 20 State Revenue Forecast. The House budget proposal is scheduled to follow. This is a critical time to ensure the Legislature is clear about the need for Medicaid funding. Your help is paramount to our effort.

Focus on Grassroots Advocacy
This week, we are asking you to take two simple steps to support the low-income senior and disabled citizens who rely on services provided by skilled nursing facilities, enhanced services facilities, and assisted living centers:

  1. Using a Washington state address, send a personal message to your legislators seeking support for funding. It takes less than two minutes to provide your details and send an email that you can personalize to reflect your own experiences.
  2. Distribute this flyer to your employees and families and commit to driving 10 additional email messages from your community members to the legislators who represent you in Olympia.

Eric Negomir is standing by to support you in these efforts. Please reach out today to learn more about how you can support our work on your behalf in Olympia.

Your Voice Matters
Special thanks to those of you who have accepted our call to action by submitting letters to your legislators and to your local media outlets. Here’s what your colleagues are telling their legislators about the need for Medicaid funding:
"If Medicaid were properly funded, we could take 29% more patients. And this would help more than just those seniors and their families – it would benefit all your constituents by addressing overcrowded hospitals."
—Adam Canary, Administrator at Bainbridge Island Health & Rehab
“I just spoke with an employee who needs to make $5 an hour more to just pay her rent and that’s not accounting for all her other living expenses. She simply cannot afford to do this important and necessary work.”
—Laura Beausoleil, Executive Director at Birchview Memory Care
