Captain Joseph G. Jones

The Early Musical Mentor of Louis Armstrong

The Colored Waif’s Home | New Orleans, Louisiana

Historical period: Approximately 1910–1913

by Allen Kimble, Jr.

NEW ORLEANS, LA (October 22, 2026) - Long before Louis Armstrong became one of the most celebrated musicians in the world, he was a young boy living in New Orleans whose life would intersect with that of Captain Joseph G. Jones, co-founder and superintendent of the Colored Waif’s Home.

Captain Jones, a veteran of the Spanish-American War, helped establish an institution dedicated to providing discipline, shelter, education, and opportunities for boys who had come into contact with the juvenile justice system. Alongside his wife, Manuella Duplessis Jones, he helped create an environment in which young Armstrong would receive guidance during his formative years.

Captain Jones and Armstrong's First Lessons

Historical accounts identify Captain Jones as an early influence on Armstrong's introduction to brass instruments.

The Afro-American newspaper of May 4, 1957, credited Captain Jones with giving Armstrong his first horn and lessons. Armstrong's own recollections also connect his earliest experiences with the bugle and military drill to the Home.

Armstrong's documented presence at the Home as early as 1910 raises an important historical possibility: that Captain Jones introduced him to instrumental music during the period approximately 1910–1912, before the organized band instruction associated with Professor Peter Davis in 1913.

Although the precise dates of Captain Jones's lessons have not been independently established, available evidence deserves recognition in accounts of Armstrong's musical beginnings.

The Arrival of Professor Peter Davis

In 1913, Professor Peter Davis joined the institution's staff and became associated with the development of its organized music program.

Davis played an important role in teaching Armstrong musical technique and developing his abilities as a cornet player. Armstrong eventually became a leader of the Home's band.

Three Figures Who Helped Shape a Legend

The story of Armstrong's formative years cannot be told fully without considering the contributions of Captain Joseph G. Jones, Manuella Duplessis Jones, and Professor Peter Davis.

Captain Jones provided leadership and early guidance. Manuella contributed care and administration to the institution. Davis helped develop the musical program through which Armstrong's talents flourished.

Their contributions form the historical foundation of the proposed feature film, The Colored Waif’s Home — A Jazz and Louis Armstrong Prequel Rooted in New Orleans History.

Upcoming Film 'The Colored Waif’s Home' to Spotlight the Overlooked Figures Behind

Louis Armstrong’s Early Years

A Jazz and Louis Armstrong prequel rooted in New Orleans history

The Colored Waif’s Home

NEW ORLEANS (Friday, October 2, 2026) — Historian and researcher Allen Y. Kimble, Jr. announces the development of The Colored Waif’s Home, a planned feature film exploring the people and institution that helped shape young Louis Armstrong before he became an international music legend.

This Jazz and Louis Armstrong prequel will bring Captain Joseph Jones, Manuella Duplessis Jones, and music instructor Professor Peter Davis to the forefront. Through their dedication, care, and guidance, the boys’ home became a place where young lives—and extraordinary musical possibilities—could take shape.

Kimble, who married into the Jones family, brings more than four decades of research to the project, along with family recollections, historical documents, photographs, and rescued memorabilia. The film will draw upon this collection to tell a story of perseverance, opportunity, and the people whose contributions deserve wider recognition.

A crowdfunding effort seeks to raise $10,000 to produce a short proof of concept, demonstrating the vision for the full-length film and helping attract collaborators and production support.

Supporters, historians, arts organizations, businesses, and prospective film partners are invited to help bring this New Orleans story to the screen.

Contribute to the campaign, share the project, or contact Allen Kimble to explore how you can participate.
