STAAR Tutorials for Students Retesting in December

Students who need to retest on one or more STAAR EOC exams will receive tutorial assignments this week. STAAR tutorials are mandatory and held during the red block of Cardinal Hour.

Mandatory tutorial notices will be sent home with students this week. The notification pages need to be signed and returned to the school. Attendance will be taken at tutorials.

Attendance Matters

In Texas, students must attend at least 90% of their classes to receive credit for a course. The "90% Rule" is part of the Texas Education Code (TEC), specifically in Section 25.092. means that if a student misses more than 10% of their class meetings (excused or unexcused), they may be at risk of losing credit. For a typical semester, this is around 9 days. The number of days varies and also depends on the length of time a student has been enrolled. Even if a student’s grades are passing, excessive absences could prevent them from receiving credit for the course. It’s important to stay on top of attendance and communicate with the school if issues arise. Attendance matters!

Students who have already begun to accumulate absences that could lead to NGs received notices along with their progress reports on Friday.

Safe Gun Storage

Linked is the document outlining State of Texas laws pertaining to concerning safe gun storage and responsibilities of the parent and/or guardian. We are informed that according to Texas State Law 46.13, in Texas, a “child” is defined as a person under the age of 17. The statute indicates that a person commits an offense if a child gains access to a readily dischargeable firearm and charges the person with criminal negligence: (1) failed to secure the firearm; or (2) left the firearm in a place the person knew or should have known the child would gain access to. Please review the attachment on safe gun storage and be familiar with it.

Library Update from Ms. Carpenter

We have officially reached the first 6 week mark! Congrats to all parents, students, and teachers! We have had a ton of successes in the library in the first 6 weeks. We have had 80 events scheduled for library services: makerspace lessons, research lessons, library check-out, PLC meetings. As you can see in the graph, 90% of these events include either collaborative lessons or Professional Learning

Community meetings with teachers to discuss future collaboration.

Ms. Carpenter has taught roughly 1,430 of our students through these classroom visits and collaborations. Student visits with unique students is almost to our halfway mark, with 40% of students having visited the library on their own at least once. Lastly, our circulation is UP from last year- with a total of 1,710 books circulated through physical library and our online book databases. We have checked out 1,156 in September alone!

Included in this weeks highlights: English II classes came to the library to learn about finding books for independent reading and learn how to earn Literacy Honor Cords through our Incentive Program. Leaders are Readers! Happy Homecoming Cardinals!

Graduation Date Announced!

The Class of 2025 will graduate on June 9th at 9:00 am. No tickets will be required to attend graduation. More information and details will be share with families in the spring.

Remind Groups

We encourage all students and parents to join their class Remind group. Throughout the year we utilize a variety of channels to communicate with our community. Remind allows us to push timely messages and reminders to you throughout the year. We are committed to not filling up your text stream. You can text to join or their are links at the bottom of the E-News that you can use to join your class group.

Early Dismissal from School

All students must check out with Ms. Espadas in the Attendance Office located in the Main Office before leaving school during the school day. Parents must also come in to check their students out, and they must present a valid ID that matches information in PowerSchool/HISD Connect. The main office will then request the student from class.

3:00 PM is the cut-off time to pick a student up early for the day. Parents arriving after 3:00 PM cannot have their student called down to the attendance office. If a student needs to be picked up early, they must be picked up before 3:00 PM.

When absent, students should turn in an excuse note (doctor’s, parent, etc…) to Ms. Espadas for filing. As a reminder, a minimum attendance requirement of 90% in each class is required to award course credit.
